For the longest time, I've wanted to volunteer but didn't have the time.   Eventually, I realized there will never be time, unless I just schedule it in and start going.  So that's what I did.  A friend of mine recommended a website called www.onebrick.org, which has a big calendar with individual volunteer events to sign up for, which allows for more schedule flexibility, and great for people like me who have trouble being bound to having to be somewhere on a regular weekly basis.

On Wednesday I helped prepare & serve dinner to homeless women at a church in DC through Dinner Program for Homeless Women (DPHW).  I was really impressed by the program director (I assume that was her role anyway) who turned our bunch of newbie volunteers into a super efficient food prep, serving line, and cleaning crew.  Apparently they especially need help on holidays, so I'm going to go over on Monday afternoon and lend a hand.

I had more interaction with the food I was helping prepare & serve than to the women we were serving it for, but I must say volunteering there reminded me how lucky Nick and I are to have jobs, a roof over our head, and 3 square meals a day.  In the current rough economy when there's so much uncertainty and fear, it's comforting to have a reminder of your blessings.
