Pulse 264 words Firefly Simon POV; Ariel Disclaimer: Clearly I claim no ownership to the Firefly 'verse or its characters; nor am I making money from this fic writing thing.
Okay, here's yours, but I don't have the inspiration icon to post here, so I'll post the flirtation one for you.

Mal is starting to suspect that Jayne might challenge his authority on purpose, just so they can have these little chats, these assertions of authority, you might say.
Jayne challenges Mal’s authority in front of the whole crew, and then he gives it back to him. In private.
The first time, Mal thought Jayne just didn’t quite understand the concept of having one’s own room meant you afforded the others a little privacy, respectful-like.
By the end of the night, he knew it wasn’t the nature of the thing a t’all.
Jayne came to submit. Maybe help him remember the next day why it was he was loyal to Mal. Every time he sat down. Help him hold his piece, let Mal do the thinking.
It was possible, after a long peaceful spell, that Jayne was looking for the excuse to come down into Mal’s bunk; but if it kept Jayne from thinking too much, or at least kept him from saying what he was thinking, then Mal wouldn’t object.
And if Mal inwardly, real quiet-like, gloated a little bit whenever Jayne sat down just a mite too carelessly, well he wasn’t like to admit it.
Wasn’t like to admit the thrill he got when he saw Jayne working up to disagreeing with him, either. Wasn’t ever going to even voice the possibility that he looked forward to his crew disagreeing with him on occasion. A man’d have to be psychotic to go looking for harebrained schemes that would lead to challenges of his authority, now wouldn’t he?
Still, he’d see Jayne sit down, and make that face, and think about why that was… and a part of him, a little bitty part way down there, gloated.
I love it! I love how it fits with the gobsmacked looks on the icon (the physical as well as mental reasons for looking like that).
And if Mal inwardly, real quiet-like, gloated a little bit whenever Jayne sat down just a mite too carelessly, well he wasn't like to admit it.
I love this part. Particularly since I'm thinking yes, Mal, yes you want to admit it.
A man'd have to be psychotic to go looking for harebrained schemes that would lead to challenges of his authority, now wouldn't he?
This is so Mal. I love it. Because some of the things he does - yes. It does seem like he's pushing them for no good reason. And now, I have at least part of the reason. It's lovely.
*glee* Makes me want to go back and rewatch episodes with slash goggles on. You just know they will both push it to the limits, too. Mal doing crazy things for people Not Jayne, Jayne doing crazy things TO people Mal cares about...
I'm thinking the Scene Where Jayne Almost Died in Ariel. That was when Jayne crossed the line. He got no loving that night. That's why the apples later, that's why the Making Up to the crew. He knew things weren't okay until Mal let him back into his bunk.
You just know they will both push it to the limits, too
Of course! Especially Mal. Pushing limits is what he does lol.

You can totally see the mental calculation too - apples + apology = action. Probably Mal woud know that's the best he was ever going to get from Jayne, too.
I've only dabbled in the fic-writing end of Firefly, although I'm a huge fan of the show and got both my parents and David's addicted to it , so I've just done Jayne/River as a birthday fic and Jayne/Simon, but I can definitely get behind Mal/Simon and Mal/Jayne. Love the power issues; totally hits my kink buttons.
