Random Title Generator Challenge - the stories and art

Aug 09, 2007 20:08

The Random Title Generator Challenge artwork and fics are in, and I thought I'd talk about them a little bit. I really enjoyed the challenge; so far (there are a few fics that are coming late), we have 4 pieces of art and 21 stories in twelve fandoms, and I lovelovelove the way that people interpreted their title prompts.

I'm not going to talk about all of the responses, but I wanted to highlight the diversity of where people went with their prompts. The Masterlist is here, and it's really worth a look.

Artwise, some made manips and others went with drawings. aryas_zehral's manips My Son, the Furry Dinosaur are disturbingly cute BSG images featuring Cally and family. Really. Super cute! And I don't even like babies!

Some of the stories are from fandoms I'm unfamiliar with, including oriolegirl's Land of the Desert Tree (Sports Night, slash). Land of the Desert Tree is really lovely - touching on the way people change as they age, and the kinds of relationships that they're looking for. I really enjoyed it, and I've never even seen an episode of Sports Night.

entangled_now's fic The Splintered Bridges (Doctor Who) gives some stunning visual imagery, and it's such a cool idea - I love the way the title inspired this one. And domitanfic's SGA fic The Cold Window (Lorne/Parrish) also creates some great images in a happy, sweet fic.

I know that some people experimented and tried different approaches for this challenge, including lunabee34, who wrote the Supernatural fic The Mystery of Proud Typewriter (I love that title!).

I also thought it was really cool the way some people took a very unwieldy title and made it work. Now All Folk'll Be Wantin' An Unnecessary Borrowed Plan Gone Wrong (Firefly), by squish_67 does just that, all with a fun look at Jayne trying to do something right(ish).

And seriously, how can you write a fic with the title I'm Being Followed By A Dangerous Fish and somehow make it connect with SGA canon? I don't know, but mklutz did it.

Anyway, these are just a few of the things that were written/created, in a variety of fandoms, including others I haven't mentioned already like Torchwood, Harry Potter, SG-1, Thoughtcrimes, and Lucifer Box.

Why not check them out?
