There was a young woman named Bella. She was the daughter of Charlie, a sheriff in his quarter and a man of few words. Bella's mother was Renee, who had left Charlie's house before Bella could speak. She was now married to Phil. Bella was brought up at Renee's farmstead but when Renee remarried Bella returned to Charlie's farm near Forks.
There was a man named Carlisle Cullen. Carlisle was an Englishman and had been a vampire for more than 300 years. He was married to Esme. Their sons were Edward, Emmett, and Jasper. Their daughters were Rosalie and Alice. They were all vampires.
The Carlislesons went to school in Forks. It was widely remarked that they were the most beautiful family in the district. They mostly kept to themselves, and no one knew that they were vampires.
