Alien overlords, for lack of a better word. They were determined to strip Earth of it's natural resources, and turn humans into unwilling soldiers.

Heh. I'm lucky I don't have to deal with them right now.

We started having issues with alien life when the resonance cascade happened. That was in 2008.

An experiment..didn't go as planned. The cascade made Earth's location known to the Combine.

Well, it's because the scientists here are plucking people from different dimensions and times, or so I've gathered. I still don't know what sort of technology they're using..

Plus, I think I'm from an alternate earth, so don't worry.
