Have you heard this term?

Right now, in my office, I'm "flicking."

This term was introduced to me by friends who went to a technical university, and I adopted it instantly. It means "to do with great energy and passion just about everything APART from what you're supposed to be doing at the time." The classic example is that you have finals in 2 days, but you just spent 11 hours lining up the mirrors in the laser lab to throw the beam across campus and burst the helium balloons being set up by the sorority for its rush party.

Several of my friends, and very much I, suffer from this malady under stress. Whenever something substantial looms over us, deadline-wise, our thoughts become impossible to focus on that task. If the pressure is removed, then no problem, it gets done. But we're probably perfectly engineered to solve that impossible task - "Don't think of an elephant right now! Think of anything else but an elephant!"

And sometimes, it's the tiniest, least substantial thing that I flick about. Like the work task I have ahead of me, that will get me recognition and closer to another "gold star" on the job. But for some reason, I'm surfing amateur pics and reading LJ and... not doing what I should be doing.

Like grad school all over again!

What's YOUR favorite way to flick?

Have you heard, or do you use, a different word for this?
