(A Shallow Breath)
Realizations are never fun. They are often profound, unexpected, life-changing, or humbling- but never fun.
Riza Hawkeye, over a cup of tea and a book, had just come to that very unwelcome conclusion. She had come to quite a few realizations in a short period of time- she loved Col. Mustang, Col. Mustang loved Ed, and apparently her own feelings didn’t matter. No, that wasn’t fair. She made it a point to express her devotion through militaristic shows of loyalty- the very point of it all was so he wouldn’t know. How could she possibly expect him to return feelings he didn’t even know existed?
But Edward? Edward? They had been antagonizing each other since the moment they met; did that just out-of-nowhere mean they were attracted to each other? That made no sense! There had been no signs, no outward expression, no anything! It came as a complete and total shock, and she wasn’t too arrogant to admit that it threw her way off balance.
She sighed, trying to forget all about the situation with her colonel. (Yes, a terribly naughty little voice at the back of her mind told her, he was her colonel- Hers! What right did Ed have to move in on what she already had a claim to?) However, that was much easier said than done. They had been through so much together. They had been together so long.
Riza sighed again as she came to another unwelcome realization. She had expected Mustang’s feelings for her to slowly ease into romantic love over all that time- just like hers for him had done. It seemed so logical- a man and a woman stuck together, the feelings of admiration and respect already there... Why, oh why, didn’t he see how much he meant to her? She never talked about her feelings, but surely he couldn’t be that blind. (Of course, it didn’t help that she had walls as high as the clouds built up around her more vulnerable feelings.)
