I was scouring through the depths of fan-fiction when an idea occurred to me. So now I am writing a one-shot (title "justification"-- heh) explaining why I so ardently ship Seto/Anzu. Bwa ha ha! It started out as an essay believe it or not, but then I had a scene idea and it sort of warped into the final format. (Ha! An SA Essay. I'm so dumb...)
So! Why do I love Seto/Anzu? Because there is a balance there. Anzu is, though this description is far too over-used, fiery, and Seto is cold. Anzu's intensely loyal to her friends, and I think that on some level Seto can respect that. He sees it paralleled in himself in relation to Mokuba. Another thing-- Seto has never shown interest in a person period. Even his deep-rooted love for Mokuba (and his need to protect him) are never made obvious unless Mokuba is in serious danger. The fact that he does care so much about Mokuba proves that he has a heart. But since he was never really exposed to love, he probably wouldn't label the protective instincts he has as such. This goes to show, however, that should Seto ever develop DEEP feelings for a person, he wouldn't let them go easily.
We don't know what Seto would want in a woman, as he's never shown any interest in one. (In my personal opinion, though, there was an edge of... something when Isis/Ishizu was telling him he used to be a priest. Maybe he goes for the dark, mysterious type.) Yes, he openly shows his disdain for Anzu and her friends, but time and time again it's proven that he at least respects Yugi. Could that respect carry over? Probably not. Heh. But when Anzu stands up to him, there's at least some amount of begrudged respect under all his contempt and anger at her for daring to cross him.
The biggest thing that supports this couple, however, is the compatible personalities. Some people don't agree with me, but-- for the most part, mind you-- it is easy to write a Seto/Anzu fic and keep them in character. Many people like to make a sentimental Seto, or an injured Seto that needs taking care of, and MAYBE that could happen-- under certain circumstances. The one thing that does bother me in characterization is what so many people do to Anzu. They make her a veritable Mary-Sue! She's allowed to be as bitchy and mean as she wants, but the moment Seto retaliates she's a wounded creature whose actions all have justification. She's almost cruel to Seto, but she gets in a teary fit if he even offers her a harsh word. And then Seto's ok with that. NO. Sorry, but that's not Anzu at all and it bothers me when people portray her as such. If Anzu could crack his icy exterior-- and we always find a way for her to do just that-- I don't think it would be that hard for her to worm her way into his heart. Yes, Seto is rather conniving, cruel, and ruthless. But there's a... "softer" side if you will.
Yargh. That's a lot of... basically nothing. But it makes me want to write more Seto/Anzu. I think that if Takahashi had continued with the characters' lives AFTER the memory world ordeal, Seto and Anzu could DEFINITELY happen. Ahh, I do dream...
Anyway, keep an eye out for "Justification" in the next week or so. Bye!
