Watchmen

So, I finally saw Watchmen last night. I think that, as a feature-length interpretation of the book, it did amazingly well. There are some elements that I could nitpick, and some artistic choices which, while I would have done differently, I can understand why they were made.
Biggest props to casting and makeup, though, for picking just the right ( Read more... )

I had so much problemations with Dreiberg -- I always read him as a broody Bruce Wayne sort, and I felt the movie turned him into more of a Clark "aw, shucks" Kent type. Particularly when they spliced in that hackneyed NOOOOOOOOOOOO! bit. He's supposed to take off with Laurie and bang her to represent mankind's reversion to peacefulness and creation in Veidt's new utopia, but he can't bloody well do that if he's outside yelling at Jon for killing his heterosexual crimefighting partner.

I dig your take on the bomb vs. squid debate, tho.

Y'see, I never got a broody vibe from Dreiberg. I always read him as being the "mild-mannered," slightly awkward kind of character - when he's out of his costume, anyway.

Of course, in the book, he didn't see Rorschach die. That difference, I think, accounts for the change of reaction. That's one of the points where the change isn't something I would have done had I been writing/directing, but it doesn't really bother me.

I don't think I'm going to see this in theaters (if it's indeed still out around here). I gotta say, I really liked the comic and from how everyone is talking not sure that I'd like the movie.

Really, the trend I've noticed is that people who have read the book tend to enjoy it more than people who haven't. Prior familiarity with the story makes it easier to follow and all that. Really, those are pretty much the only points in the movie I had any issue with, and it's nearly 3 hours long. That's a whole lot of movie where I was still ridiculously happy with what was on the screen.
