Well, progress is being made. I landed a job where I have actually been hired on as a "wildlife biologist" and I. Am. Ecstatic. So I haven't said much about it, but my actual goal in life at the moment is to get short-term wildlife surveying jobs and travel around the U.S. and the world. The problem was momentum--all my wildlife experience has been in education (NOT my field, I DON'T have the patience) and in rehabilitation (the archnemesis of state and federal wildlife agencies), and nobody wanted a green wildlife biologist (hereafter to be referred to as "wildbio"). So now I have a survey of the threatened marbled murrelets ("Brachyramphus marmoratus"), training included.
Job gained: May 11.
Road trip!: May 14--leave at 6am, arrive in Sacramento, CA 730pm
May 15--leave 8am, arrive in Arcata, CA 230pm
May 16--explore Arcata, run into Saturday Market and many people with dreadlocks, go for uphill hike (yuck!) in old-growth forest
May 17--training begins! wake up at 3am, meet instructor who could easily be a John Travolta impersonator, learn about marbled murrelets. Finish work (and a delicious breakfast) at 930. Nap. Go for a hike in the redwoods
Happy happy happy. Must go to sleep now.
