Critical Review

Vincent Ward created a visually and emotionally spectacular movie in 1998 called What Dreams May Come. When I first saw the movie I thought 'science fiction,' others would have thought of it as a romance or drama. The movie will make you think about life and death, how strong your bond between your significant other is, or it could make you think about family values and what they mean to you.
If you were to believe in heaven and hell, or practiced religion very seriously, you would believe that this movie was almost realistic, or very unrealistic, although I believed it was a great outline for people who thought either way, it gives you an image of how wonderful or how
terrible your afterlife will be like. This movie gives you the freedom to think and ponder about whether or not there is such thing, or if that is what its like. This movie also shows great family morals, for example: the father and the son had some troubles before the son died, so then they
realized how important each of them were to one another, or any family member in that matter, some more than others.

The movie stars Academy Award winners Robin Williams and Cuba Gooding Jr., and also stars the up and coming well known actress Annabella Sciorra. The movie is about a family of four and the parents lose both of their children which causes the mother, played by Annabella Sciorra, to become depressed and insane and put into a mental institution, while their
marriage becomes incredibly difficult. After having lost their two children, the husband, played by Robin Williams, unexpectedly dies in a car accident on their wedding anniversary just a few years after the wife had gotten out of the hospital. She becomes even more depressed, she tries
to cope with her feelings by doing what she loved, painting, but becomes suicidal. While Robin Williams goes to heaven, his wife goes to hell, and he faces the harsh reality that his entire family is dead, so he is set on a journey to find and save his wife and family.

This movie is so fascinating and so well put together, it is emotionally draining. It was hard for me to even get up and leave the room when I decided to order it on Pay Per View. The producers, Barnet Bain and Stephen Simon, had such brilliant and active imaginations, if you blinked for a milli-second you would miss a whole wonder of beautiful art and creativity. The music is mostly symphonic and beautiful, they were able to make the music and the scene to fit so well together.
I first saw this movie when I was ten and immediately fell in love with it, then I hadn't seen it in a long time, but always hoping that sometime it would come on regular cable, even though it had commercials, I wouldn't mind. I never forgot about it, so when it came on the Sci-Fi channel very recently, I dropped everything I was doing and watched it, some movies are just that amazing where you have to watch it.
Rarely do we see any movies that come out about the afterlife, but since Robin Williams and Vincent Ward decided to take that chance in hopes of no ridicules, they set the bar and now more movies are coming out about it, some recent movies like The Seven People You Meet in Heaven, a made for TV movie.
Critics and general audiences had very diverse opinions on this movie, some thought it was bad but most thought it was good, and critics gave it a fair. I believe that if you saw this movie you would fall in love with it too. This movie wasn't exactly a success, but it wasn't a failure either. Although it did not get 'best movie of the year', it did get 'best visual effects' at the Academy Awards in 1999.
