Anyone else watching the Olympics, or is it just me? Mostly just because there's nothing else on during the Olympics, but also because... well, I kinda like some of it. Actually like the Winter Olympics more than the Summer Olympics.
I got caught up this weekend, as I've been Tivo-ing throughout the week so I could watch things like Figure Skating, Ice Dancing, and Snowboarding, but skip stuff like Alpine Skiing, and Ski Jumping. And, you know, all of the commentaries. I so don't care what the announcers think of how anyone did or didn't do; just shut up and let me listen to the music already.
I'm not sure what I think of the new scoring system. It seems both more fair, but also more strict. Which is both good and bad - one of the huge criticisms of Ice Skating and Ice Dancing has been that it's so subjective, and then with the controversy with the paid-off judge, I can see where a change was needed. But, is it just me, or has Ice Skating lost some of the "pretty" quality that I loved so? It just seems that many of them are foregoing any kind of choreography in favor of loading the program down with technical things. I've always loved both Ice Skating and Ice Dancing; I love the heart-stopping jumps and throws of Ice Skating, but can be just as fascinated by the lyrical, beautiful flow of Ice Dancing. There's always been just enough of the "dancing" in the Ice Skating to make it, well... pretty. Seems to me, they're losing some of that.
Could be just me, though.
And, yes, I'm also pretty sure that every single one of those "hardship" stories are aimed specifically at me. I was crying when they showed the footage from 2004 when he dropped his partner hard enough to knock her out cold. I sniffled through the whole program after the woman of the silver medalist pair fell on that quadruple try. I didn't even care if they won, I was just so oddly proud of her for doing it anyway. So, either I'm a total sap, or I'll be enjoying the funnest five days of the month starting tomorrow or Wed.
The Snowboarding was cool! New favorite sport! I don't even know what half of what I was watching is called, but whatever it is that looks more like a skateboarding competition than anything else. I liked that. I think I stopped gasping (thinking they were just going to hit that edge) after the fifth or sixth one.
And I feel so sorry for Lindsey Jacobellis - yes, she made a mistake, and, yes, it cost her the gold. But, good lord, she's only 20 years old, she did win silver, and you just know she's going to be talking about that one mistake for the next couple decades or so. Interviewers will bring it up in every interview for as long as she remains in the sport. Can you imagine some mistake that you made at twenty being brought up for the rest of your life? That? Has got to suck.
And that's enough ranting from me for now. I think I'll go downstairs, finish the laundry, and watch the TiVo-ed Ice Dancing Free Skate. 'Cause I'm a dork.
