Went to a greek festival yesterday, in the greek precinct. Was quite fun. Aliza, Shu Min and I walked into the city, which was a good thing, cause at the greek festival we ate yumm stuff.
there was some greek dancing, and a soccer game going, food stalls, and a stall selling cultural items. there was a lot of advertising by Laiki, (laiki?) which is a bank which sponsered the festival. What would have made it better was if there had been some free cultural things that involved the public, i think. But all the dancing was all on stage, there were some fairground rides, but they had to be paid for, and they werent that exciting looking. i should organise a festival. or not, i have other things to do right now! but if i organised a festival, i would get more of the public involved. also, just one more complaint about the festival, was that a lot of the talking going on on the stage, you had to be bi-lingual for. which i wouldnt mind so much, but i dont even know what the greek word for thankyou is, so it was a bit exclusive. thats another thing i would do if i organised a greek festival. i would organise for pamphlets that said a little about greek culture maybe, and had a few greek words that everyone should know on it. i would give them out for free, instead of giving out "come join laiki bank" pamphlets whos only information was on interest rates. grrr. anyway, i still had fun. we went into a pastry shop. greek pastry shop, to be precise. which was selling doughnuty things and baklava and other greek pastrys, all soaked in honey, very sweet, and very scrumptious. as there were 3 of us, we bought 5 different things all up and shared them, so we got to try more things. They were so nice. mmm *dreams of baklava*
i ate far too much, but it was well worth it!
and today, seeing as this weekend seemed to be a weekend for festivals in melbourne, i went to the buddhas festival and multicultural day at federation square. they had spanish dancing on the stage, and food stalls that sold vegetarian chicken dumplings. i dont quite get why people are vegetarian and eat vegetarian meat. vegetarian bacon, vegetarian chicken and the like. to me (as an omnivore) it is a strange thing.
other things the stalls were selling was fried bean curd, curry laksa, pearl iced tea, red bean jelly, gado gado, dutch pancakes, and a tonne of other really yum looking things. which made me wish i hadnt eaten so much for brunch this morning, cause it smelt and looked so good. i place a big emphasis on food, ive noticed. food is important, its universal, it brings people together. its good stuff.
well, most of it. the congee at brunch this morning looked so awful. it used to be so good!! what happened?? about 3 weeks ago, the flavour disappeared. which was sad, cause before that it was soo nice! but it was still ok, cause you could get some bacon, and add some salt and pepper, and although it didnt taste quite as good, and took some effort to do, it was ok. but today, oh today. i went down for brunch wondering if the congee may have miraculously improved....only to see what looked like the grey water you get after washing your clothes in the sink, except it had green spinach leaves floating on top. thinking they may have decided to give us something different, and always being willing to try something new, i asked what it was. the reply was 'congee, apparently', and a the 'congee' was stirred a little. a few sad looking rice bits floated to the top of the grey water, looking incredibly sad. i have to say i passed.
someone else was brave enough to try it, and said it tasted of nothing. the whole table looked sad. brunch just isnt the same anymore (T-T)
on the way back from the festival i got some green rooibos tea, and it tastes scrumptious. and smells divine (its got peach smells in it). i am happy :-) thankyou to miss lauren s for that b'day present!
ooh, on thursday, i went to see the musical "Working" put on by the union house theatre. it was so good. and there was a couple of very pretty looking boys on the stage. haha :-p some of it was sad, some of it was funny, some of it was depressing, some of it was inspiring, some of it was happy. and the people on the stage could quite possibly be famously famous one day, and i will be able to say: "oh yes, i went to see one of their early performances, when they were just beginning..."
im going to bed now. i have an essay to look forward to being given tommorrow. i have three days to finish it. bleah. cant wait till ive finished my exams. i will have 9 days of being in melbourne before i go home. i've made a small list of things i can do.
