Music Reviews #4

1. The Beatles - Free as a Bird: This was the first Beatles song to come out in 25 years back in 1994 or 1995. I can't remember exactly which year because it was around Thanksgiving, so I've got that whole end of the year thing to think about. Anyway, this song was recorded for John Lennon's original home demos. The demo of the song is pretty great. I've only heard it a few times but it's really eerie to listen to. This finished version, though, is something else. I was still a relatively new Beatles fan when I first heard this song but I was still pretty impressed. I don't really have any funny anecdotes or stories to go along with this song. It's just a great song that I've always loved and you should too.

2. The Beatles - Rain: The only album that I know of that has this song is Past Masters Volume 2. If I'm wrong, let me know. Ringo has said that this was his favorite song to play drums on and when you listen to it, you can tell. It's not a real fast song and it's pretty repetitive but it's super energetic. I've always been extremely impressed with this song. There's something about it that makes me upset that I didn't come up with it first because it's so simple but so perfect.

When I first got the Past Masters album, I listened to this song and "The Inner Light" non-stop. "The Inner Light" would be on this list if I could find it to download, but I guess that's even too obscure for the Beatles' catalog. If you haven't heard this song, you should definitely find it. It's from their in between stage. They weren't writing radio hits anymore and they were getting more experimental but this song still has that charm of their early pop hits.

3. Berlin - The Metro: So, I know I already reviewed this song, but that was the Alkaline Trio version. This is the original, performed by Berlin. There's not really much more that I can say about this song other than what I already have. It's a super catchy pop song. The lyrics are interesting, the guitar part is pretty ominous, and it will get stuck in your head if you listen to it.

4. Blink 182 - Here's Your Holiday: I've always really like Blink 182. I know they're whiny and sellouts and what have you, but they write good songs and I enjoy them. This song is one of my favorites for obvious reasons if you know me and know the lyrics. It's super hateful and bitter and I like to listen to this when I'm really pissed off. I've tried to write songs like this but I'm not as eloquent, I guess. Maybe the trick is to write about high school as if you're still in high school. Who knows?

5. Bo Diddley - Bo Diddley: Bo Diddley's awesome. I love this song. I don't know why he wasn't allowed (or supposed) to play this on Ed Sullivan. It's completely retarded. Censorship has never made any sense to me and I doubt it ever will. This song is a great folk-rock song. I actually did a report on Bo Diddley just because I had this song stuck in my head. It seems like a lot of people would know this song but at the same time, I'm not too sure about that. To me, it's a song and era of music that I've always listened to but I get the feeling that most people aren't as familiar with it as I am. You should be, though. Well, not necessarily, I suppose. If you're a musician or ever claimed to be a musician, you should be familiar with it. A person has no right to claim that they're a musician if they don't know their musical history. This is a great song to start with if you're interested.

And that's all for tonight.
