Sherlock Holmes (Granada 1984 - 1994)
Hello, I'd like to take this opportunity to rec what I believe maybe the best version of Sherlock Holmes to grace the screen, big and small. Back when I was searching for a way to pass the time until the 3rd season of the BBC's Sherlock, I began searching online for a recommendation for another version of Sherlock Holmes that I may like and every I went it seemed like everyone was singing the praises of the late Jeremy Brett , many calling him, and rightfully so I might add, the very embodiment of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous detective.
After I had thoroughly angsted myself out on every post Reichenbach fanfic I could find, I added the Granada series at the top of my Netlfix queue, and once I got the first DVD, that as they say was history. I was utterly spellbound from the first moment I saw Jeremy Brett's Holmes on screen and by the time I made my way through the first half of the series he had forever claimed my heart!
I won't go on and on singing Brett's praises, although I could because the man was just utterly mindblowing ... instead I shall recommend to you what I believe are the top five episodes of the Granada series where Jeremy Brett and depending on the season, David Burke/Edward Hardwicke were at their finest!
Number 1 for me will always will be The Six Napoleons because this episode's mystery is fascinating but more so because of the acting performances of Jeremy Brett, Edward Hardwicke, and Colin Jeavons, the latter playing Inspector Lestrade. I came to adore Granada's Lestrade, and at the end of this episode Brett does some of the finest acting I have ever seen from any actor before or since!
Number 2 for me is The Speckled Band as this is one of my go episodes when I want a gripping mystery but even more so because it is just a joy to watch Jeremy Brett in this episode as his Holmes pieces together what really happened to Julia Stone!
Number 3 for me is The Norwood Builder, which is another go to episode for me as again Brett was a joy to watch, and this was the first mystery I figured out before the end of the episode and was completely right. It also marks the only appearance of Colin Jeavons as Lestrade during David Burke's turn as Watson, and mores the pity as the dear Inspector got on my nerves so much in this one!
Number 4 for me is The Devil's Foot, because it shows that although Holmes was supposed to be on holiday, he just couldn't resist a puzzling mystery. The ending of this one I must confess bothered me quite a lot!
Last but not least at Number 5 is The Second Stain because once more the mystery is gripping but it's even more so I loved the rapport between Holmes and Watson while they're trying to recover a letter than could mean widespread war if it falls into the wrong hands! Colin Jeavons make another appearance as Inspector Lestrade, rounding out my joy at this episode!
