Next to the loss of her only child, Isobel found the loneliness that came from now being almost completely was alone in the world was the worst part of Matthew's death. And even the blessing of little George did not help to ease these feelings because Lady Mary was his mother, and not her. Oh Lady Mary, along with Lord and Lady Grantham, had all made it clear that Isobel was welcome to visit her grandson anytime that she wished. Although she sensed they all meant what they had said, it wasn't an invitation she often took advantage of.
So Isobel continued to be adrift in her grief and loneliness.
