Thought it was time to do a music post, since I’m deleting a whole buncha files from my computer. In a musical mood, so:
From the concept album for Stephen Sondheim’s (obscure) Evening Primrose, NPH singing
If You Can Find Me, I’m Here. For comparison, here’s
Mandy Patinkin’s version, from his album Dress Casual. It doesn’t seem like it’s particularly fair to put them side by side cause it’s MANDY, for God’s sake. But download them first - NPH’s version owns Mandy’s. Yeah, I said it. Probably the first and only time I’ll say it, but still.
Another NPH track, and probably my favorite version of the song aside from Barbra Streisand’s (but hers is truncated, so it doesn’t officially count):
Not While I’m Around, with Patti LuPone as Mrs. Lovett. It’s just so lovely and sad. From the 2001 New York Philharmonic performance of Sweeney Todd, which was eventually restaged and filmed in 2003 with the San Francisco Symphony. Which I own on DVD. *grin*
From the 1999 Broadway revival of You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown, Kristin Chenoweth, Anthony Rapp, BD Wong and a whole bunch of awesome people:
Happiness.
From Spring Awakening, the haunting opening track
Mama Who Bore Me.
And since I mentioned Barbra, here’s some Yentl:
Papa Can You Hear Me.
And my current favorite Sweeney Todd track:
the four-part second-act Johanna reprise, aka Johanna III. It wasn’t included in the movie, cause Tim Burton dumped a whole bunch of subplots. Not sure who plays the Judge in the NY production, but the rest of the cast is George Hearn (Sweeney), Lisa Vroman (Johanna) and Davis Gaines (Anthony), same as the SF production. Gorgeous, gorgeous song from an amazing production.
Finally, a song that always makes me cry:
For Good. From Stephen Schwartz's Wicked. Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel. Snif. They're so awesome together.
Yun lang po. Download and enjoy.
