Since I used to watch Ben 10 and did, in fact, write a couple of stories for it. I'm going to expound upon the Omniverse preview shown on CN tonight.
I don't mind the animation style. Truly, I don't. Ben's a little too thin but whatever, I don't need realism in my cartoons. I watched Samurai Jack and loved it. But what the fuck were they thinking when they drew Kevin Levin? What the fuck is with that neck? Why does it look like he hasn't slept...ever? Kevin is a handsome dude. Screw you, character designers.
I guess they thought it didn't matter since they were putting him and Gwen on a bus. I have mixed feelings about this. I'm glad that there is less of the two of them because their relationship grates on me - their banter wasn't affectionate, it was cringe-worthy and eye-rolling. The only time they had relationship trouble, Kevin was destructive and Gwen played the obsessively loyal-to-the-point-of-idiocy girlfriend. Like that hasn't been done a gabillion times. The two of them breaking up would have given them some development and made things interesting, but instead they played the stable duo to philandering Ben, who manages to have a love life that is active, complicated, full of cheating and yet still boring. Probably because there's nothing interesting about his love interests - they're all one bland trope or another. If any of this changed since eight months ago when I stopped watching, then...no, wait, I don't care.
But Gwen was the only female character with any kind of personality at all, and Kevin was a tragic, complicated hero (if you can ignore the gaping plot holes and poor universe-building of his story). So I don't like them together, but I don't want to see them go. Can we just give them their own (separate) shows?
Other than that, the whole thing sucks. An alien built out of Legos? Really? Now we're seeing the complex underground Plumber base? Where the hell was that in Alien Force? The new partner seems like a one-note, uninteresting, flat character. Unless he has some complex background, or if there's a character arc where he learns to get past his hero-worship, or something, then he's just a big blah.
So, yeah. Not watching it. Don't care.
