What have you most regretted losing?
I don't have much to regret losing, because I haven't lost much.
I either never had it in the first place, or I held onto it so tightly that there's no conceivable way I could possibly lose it.
Among those things I never had are approval from my father, caring from my mother, acceptance from friends, and understanding from lovers. I never had the exceedingly high GPA or the money for trips to Paris. I never had free time to sit in the park and read silly romance novels. I never had the designer jeans or the desire to smoke pot and hang out with the "cool kids". But mostly I never had someone who could see through all the bullshit and appreciate the real me.
Some things I never gave myself the chance to lose are the thoughts I've held and the positions I've achieved. I never let go of my resolve to stand up for the fights that need fighting and the issues that need projecting. I never stopped arguing with people who disagree, because those are the ones who most need their minds changed. But most of all I never gave up on my determination to get what I want.
