HAWKEYE CAKE

May 17, 2012 15:02

So, yeah, this cake was DEFINITELY made for challenge three over at avengers-land. I'm quite proud of it.

RECIPE
Cake
I'm not ashamed to say that I used a box mix, because I'm cheap and lazy, but if you have a cake mix you love, go ahead and use it. I just used a Duncan Hines Dark Chocolate Fudge cake mix.

Icing
This I got from Wilton's website.
You'll need:
  • 1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 cup cocoa OR 7 (1 ounce each) unsweetened chocolate squares, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 cups (approx. 1 lb.) confectioners' sugar
  • 4-5 tablespoons milk
  • An electric mixer

Here's what you do:
Cream shortening and butter with electric mixer.
Add cocoa and vanilla.
Gradually add sugar, one cup at a time, beating well on medium speed. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl often. When all sugar has been mixed in, icing will appear dry.
Add milk and beat at medium speed until light and fluffy.

So then, level your cake (I didn't have to, since I have those bake even strips, which are fantastic) so it's flat, and frost it. If you have a special way of doing it, that's fine. It's whatever will get the job done. I used a decorating bag with Wilton tip #789 and then smoothed it out with a spatula.

Now comes the fondant. You can buy this pre-made at Hobby Lobby or a similar crafts/hobby store. I rolled mine out until it was thin enough to see the lines on my chart through it. Then I covered the cake with it, smoothed it out, and cut around the edges.

I colored another piece of fondant purple (using Wilton icing color and a toothpick and my fingers to knead the color through). Then I cut out a thin circle, wet the back with a small brush and some cold water, and stuck it on top. Out of the remaining fondant, I cut two straight strips and stuck those to the top as well. Then I took simple red writing icing and drew small "marks" next to the strips (you'll see in the pic below what I'm talking about if you can't visualize it).

Aaaaaaaaaaand, that's it. I'll put up another pic when I actually cut into it, seeing as how I have yet to eat dinner today. lol I was going to have little arrows made of gum paste sticking out of the sides, like Hawkeye had shot at it, but the gum paste wasn't working for me, so I gave up. >.>
