On June 13, 1932, USS Akron (ZRS-4), the first U.S. Navy airship built as an airborne aircraft carrier, was seen flying through the clouds over Maxwell Field, a U.S. Army Air Corps airfield that is now Maxwell Air Force Base (Montgomery, Alabama). Less than a year later, on April 4, 1933, USS Akron would be lost in a thunderstorm off the coast of New Jersey that claimed the life of its "father" and chief supporter, naval aviation chief Admiral William A. Moffett. This picture of USS Akron is on display at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center (Chantilly, Virginia) as part of the Smithsonian's exhibit on lighter-than-air flight.
