Making friends takes effort

Chapter Five

1 week later

As i close my locker I laugh as Matt tells me another cheesy joke.

"What do you call a girl with a frog on her head?" he asks me.

"I don't know Matt, what /do/ you call a girl with a frog on her head?" I reply, trying not to giggle because I know the ending will be really, really bad.

"Lily - get it?" he laughs as I giggle at his silliness.

"What are you two laughing at?" I hear a deep voice behind me enquire.  I turn to find Dan standing behind me, as he smiles at me I wrap my arms around his waist and give him a big hug. Over the past week Dan and I have become closer and closer, we're the best of friends and the best part is all of his friends are my friends and vice versa. I was still catching up with all the inside jokes but all in all I was getting along well.

"I was just laughing at Matt's stupidity," I reply, turning to grin at Matt, we've got to the point in our friendship where insulting each other is a given.

"Hey! It was humour! Not stupidity!" he shouts over the noise of the crowd of people now filling the corridor.

Suddenly I'm flying forward and slamming into a locker and before I can even register the pain Dan has me on my feet before someone steps on me and is currently checking to see if I'm okay - a bit dazed that's all.

"Oi! Jason! C'mere!" Dan yells to a boy further down the corridor. I look up to see a buff boy making his way back towards us.

"Hey Dan, what's up?" he asks, smiling.

"You wanna apologise to Sapphire? You just shoved her into the lockers," he replied, fixing Jason with a steely glare.

"Oh sorry man, I didn't mean to - I'm really sorry! I didn't know she was your girl otherwise I wouldn't have done that at all," he said to the both of us. I'm pretty sure shock isn't the right word for the emotion that crossed my face.

"We aren't going out," Dan explains to Jason.

"Oh we'll, in that case," he turns to me, turning his back to Dan, "would a date make up for my rudeness?"

"Uh-hmmm..... I-I..." I glance over Jason shoulder to look at Dan helplessly, I'm lost for words but he knows exactly what I want to say.

"What she's trying to say, Jason, is the words 'no - that would not make up for it', please leave before you make her any more uncomfortable," Dan says confidently. Jason just nods his head in understanding before pushing back into the crowd.

"T-thanks," I stutter. When I get nervous or flustered or am put on the spot I begin to stutter and I hate it.

"It's okay - no guy like that is gonna hurt my best friend," he tells me while slinging an arm over my shoulders. He lifts my school bag and I try to take it away from him,"I'll carry it for you" he tells me.  All I do is nod because I know I can't pursuade him otherwise. We both say bye to Matt and make our way down the less crowded corridor and out into the sunlight.  We talk the whole way to my house, as we reach the door I let myself in, leaving the front door open for Dan to follow me in and close behind himself. The first thing I do is move to the kitchen.

My mum had to stay away for longer than she expected so Dan has been coming over and keeping me company. He laughs at me as he walks into the room to find me with my head in the fridge looking for something edible.

Walking over to the biscuit cupboard, he lifts down an already opened packet of rich teas and takes three before offering me the packet. I take four and get a glass of water.

"Greedy pig," he chuckles as he sees I have one more biscuit than he does.

"Ha! Excuse me but I'm not the one eating someone else's food!" I retort. He just smiles sheepishly at me, "It's okay, I was kidding - eat away."
