Nearly Christmas time 2010
Luke did not know what to do. He had run out of ideas. Ever since Thanksgiving he had been trying to figure out what he should get Reid for Christmas.
It had to be something special. After all, it was their first Christmas together.
But he didnt have any ideas. He thought about giving Reid a nice watch so he could think about Luke every time he checked the time. But then he remembered that for the first Christmas he spent with Noah, he had bought him one with an inscription on the back. He didnt want to repeat that idea that for his first Christmas with Reid.
He even went snooping in Reids room when Reid was shaving. But other than finding out that Reid had a yoga mat that he apparently used regularly (so it could be replaced), he didnt find any clues.
Luke had come over to hang out with Reid. But while Reid was finishing the last of his paperwork on his laptop, his pager went off so he ran out after saying a quick "Talk to you later."
Luke was caught off guard by Reid leaving in such a hurry. He was still holding the paperwork from the foundation he had brought with him, when he noticed Reid had left his laptop open.
Could he find a gift idea there?
His boyfriends need for structure was clear when he looked at the folders on his laptop. Luke could immediately see what was work-related. There was only one folder marked personal.
He decided he would leave it closed for now and just open up Reids browser history. Maybe Luke could find out where Reid shopped online.
It turned out Reid had one online store for clothes and another for books. Medical ones, of course, so that was that. No helpful hints there.
So far he only knew that his hard working doctor had three interests: food, chess and yoga.
Lukes family had begun asking him what they could get Reid for Christmas so Luke knew they would give Reid a yoga mat, chess set and enough delicious treats that would last Reid until the New Year.
Luke was out of ideas. But he couldnt screw this up.
Reid knew Luke had bought Noah an expensive laptop for Christmas with the newest movie editing software. Other than a remark about how Luke should not expect a thank you note, Reid was okay with that. But Luke felt Reid deserved something even nicer.
He did not want to break Reids trust in him, but he had run out of options. He clicked on the personal folder.
It contained three folders: Special cases, Personal documents and Private.
When he opened the Private folder, he saw three more folders. Before Oakdale, Katie and Jacob, and a folder called Luke.
Luke totally forgot about his search for a present. He just needed to know what was in the Luke folder.
Two more folders came up. Photos and a blank folder.
He was curious about what kind of pictures Reid would have. All the pictures he had with Reid were the wing promotional photos and four pictures Katie sent him. Two were from Thanksgiving; one was a group picture in front of the hubbard squash before the curving and the other was a shot of them at the dinner table. The other two were even more special to him. One Katie took when she saw them on her couch together looking, as she called it, "so super cute" and the other with Jacob on Reids lap as Luke held out a toy to him. Luke needed more photos with his handsome boyfriend.
The first picture he found on the laptop was of Luke on the mechanical bull. Reid had told him about how he had kept it on his phone for a while, but deleted it when Luke was thinking about going back to Noah. Reid said he was glad that he remembered that he emailed it to himself so he did not lose it for good.
Next to pictures that Luke already had on his computer, Reid had two other photos. One was of him asleep. He had no idea of when Reid took it. The other was of Luke reading a book on the couch. He didnt remember that photo being taken either. But he loved that Reid had taken those pictures of him. Reid already made him feel wanted and loved, but to see that he took pictures of him just made him feel so happy.
He had one more folder to open, but he hesitated. He decided to not open up the blank folder. It was one thing to open the history and look at photos, but he would draw a line there. He was closing the lid just as Reid walked back in.
"Looking for new blackmail material, Luke?" Reid said as he hung his coat in the closet.
Luke turned to look at Reid, worried that Reid had lost all the positive feelings that he had for him.
"I can explain, Reid. Please let me explain." Luke stood up in a hurry and walked toward Reid. "Will you listen to me, please?"
"Sit down, Luke." Reid put his hand on the couch next to him. "I wont bite your head off. Im pretty confident you are not looking for blackmail material. I assume you were just checking your mail or something."
Luke sat down next to Reid, a little further away than usual. "I actually was snooping, Reid." Luke did not dare to look at Reid just yet. "I was hoping to find some ideas for a Christmas gift for you. I wanted to look at your internet history for any webshops that you might like. I couldnt find anything. So I tried your private folder. But I swear I only looked at your pictures. I was just closing the laptop as you walked in. Im sorry. I shouldnt have looked. Do you want me to go?"
Reid looked at Luke. When he first arrived in Oakdale, he met this strong, confident young man who could stand up to him. He later saw the insecure side of Luke, but only in his interactions with Noah. He did not like that that Luke was looking on his laptop. But he couldnt understand why Luke would worry that Reid would send him home.
"No, of course not." Reid lifted Lukes chin so Luke had no choice but to look at him. "But why on earth didn't you just ask me what I would like? Usually you bug me, trying to learn more about my childhood, hobbies and what kind of music I liked when I was a teenager. I would have pegged you as nosy instead of sneaky. What changed?"
"This is our first Christmas. I needed to surprise you. Plus you know what I am getting Noah. After the way we started out, I didnt want you to think that I still cared more about him because I bought him a big expensive gift that he will like and I gave you something you were just a little bit happy with. I need you to know that you are the one for me. And I want to keep it that way."
"Luke, you can either buy me a Porsche or just a scarf. As long as you are kissing me under the mistletoe and come home with me after the party, Im good. Noah needs the gift you are getting him. Im a neurosurgeon. I dont need you to buy me expensive gifts."
Reid was glad that Luke was smiling again. "I could really use a scarf and maybe some matching gloves. Oakdale is much colder than Dallas."
Luke leaned closer to Reid. "You will get the coolest winter set I can find. Thank you for not being too angry with me. Im so glad you still want to be my boyfriend."
Luke spent the rest of the evening showing how glad he was.

Reid did enjoy celebrating Christmas with Luke and his family. He was surprised that they all tried so hard to give him personal gifts. Luke went out of his way to find all of his Reids favorite grooming products as well as a very warm and comfortable scarf with matching gloves and hat.
But his favorite gift had been the two mugs with a drawing Luke made himself. "Maybe you can keep one at home and one at the hospital," Luke had said with a sweet, shy smile.
Yeah, having Luke for a boyfriend was very nice indeed.
