I love to read fanfic, right? And there are so many great authors out there, writing so much great stuff, that sometimes stories are bound to become AU*. Some of these stories have been rendered AU by existing canon; some have always been just left of our SPN universe, but all of them are great and well-worth the read.
Cops and Graverobbers by
minim_calibre. Slash, Dean/Henricksen (sic), R, 7300 words.
I love Hendrickson, love how he played off our boys. And this fic, unfortunately made completely AU by Jus In Bello, captures everything I love about the man. It's a great story, good character moments surrounded by quality casefic, perfect dialogue and an unforgettable sex scene.
The Night Country by
destina. Gen, 17751 words, very adult themes.
This story goes AU during Devil's Trap. It is terrifying and wonderful in equal measures, and oh so real. I love her protective!Sam, her broken!Dean, and her Bobby-voice is great. And my heart breaks for John in this. Definitely heed the adult content warnings on this one.
these are the times by
phantomas. Gen, 3454 words, outsider-POV, nebulous future time.
This one is AU after In My Time Of Dying, but really, canon is the least important of things to this story. It's apocalyptic, with a hypnotic narration style, and the words just make this reality come to life. It kept me thinking for a long time.
Interesting Times by
trollprincess. Gen, R, 4100 words. Indeterminate timeframe.
This one isn't quite the same as the others, in that it *could* fit into canon just about anywhere. But it *does* contain many AUs within its framework. I love how each manifestation brings out another aspect of Sam's relationship to Dean.
Golden Lights Go Dark Tonight by
pixel_0. Gen, R, 5098 words.
AU for No Rest For The Wicked, written post-Mystery Spot. Oh. My. God. This is just chilling. I love a good horror fic, and this is really psychological horror that just keeps twisting and corkscrewing around. The way it shows the changes as being so gradual just gives me shivers.
If He Shall Gain The Whole World by
kroki_refur. Gen, PG-13, 3690 words.
Another one AU from No Rest For The Wicked, and writen post-Mystery Spot. All I can say is, Oh, Sam. Oh, DEAN. Plot-wise, this is AU, but I get the feeling that emotionally, season 4 will hit some of these notes.
Last, but definitely not least,
A World of His Own Making and
Wolves at the Door by
kellifer_fic. Gen-fic, PG-ish, and AU from an indeterminate point in canon.
This is an AU where the events of Season 3 never take place. Dean gets sidelined from the hunt by a de-aged Sam, leaving Bobby and Ellen to pick up the slack. It's just fabulous.
Part One and
Part Two, since they aren't actually linked to the prologue.
* I was going to use the term "Jossed," but that's another fandom and I am of the impression that "Kripked" means having your fic confimed in canon, not absolutely screwed.
