I went to try and steal her, but could not fit her thru the backyard gate. There was a side gate that I could get into, but anyone inside would have seen me, and I was kinda scared of getting shot. So I decided to knock on the door and see if anyone was home. This is what happened for about 7 minutes:
knock knock knock
(from inside) "Whoddat?"
"My name is Amy"
nothing.....nothing ....nothing.....
Repeat as needed
Finally, an old infirm man answered, and I simply said "I pass by here every day, and your dog needs to go to the vet. Can I take her?" The man paused (for about 2 seconds) and says "Sure you can take her." Um, okay. So I went out back to get her the guy couldn't tell me how old she is, and he said that she doesn't have a name. Nice.
So I took her to the vet. She told me that, if I hadn't taken the dog, she'd be dead by the fall. Seems she has heartworms, intestinal worms, scabies (a form of mange), she's completely under-nourished, her fur is a matted nightmare, and she has a number of lumps which must be removed next week. Once they remove the masses, they can send to the lab and see if she is overridden with cancer. Her bloodwork came back surprisingly good, and the rest of the treatments are manageable. It all depends on the body masses now.
Even though it's going to cost me a lot of money & it's inconvenient for many reasons...I feel so great about saving her life. This sweet little dog is staring up at me with eyes full of wonder and gratitude. Even if she is extremely ill and doesn't live very long, at least this part of her life will be filled with lots of love. She is housebroken, and sleeps on her new doggie bed next to my bed. All she wants is for me to pet her - I doubt that she has ever been touched by human hands in her 6-year old life. She is so excited & amazed to have her belly rubbed, and to be able to lie around in the air conditioning, and to have regular meals. It's as if she just discovered the Land of Oz!
Since no one has ever told her she's pretty in her life, I've named her Bella.
