Friday night, David made me dinner at his place, and we went to an opening night party for the Atlanta Film Festival, held at the old Mumbo Jumbo location. The party was hosted by a handful of local filmmakers who are involved in this year's festival. It's nice to see so many filmmakers working with and supporting one another. We've needed that here in the film community for a long time, and hopefully the sentiment will grow as the film scene here continues to thrive.
Saturday night we went to see Jacob Gentry's "Last Goodbye". It's been getting a ton of press since being featured on a 20/20 episode about Nepotism in Hollywood. The film features the kids of some famous actors (Andy Garcia, Faye Dunaway, Harry Dean Stanton, Anthony Quinn, and Cybil Sheppard whose daughter is her spitting image.)
There are also nice cameos by Faye Dunaway and David Carradine. Lots of talk is floating around about a possible disctribution deal for the film. I think it would be great for the film scene here in Atlanta. It will be interesting to see what happens.
Sunday I had a lot of work during the day. Then noangelshere and I went to a festival screening of "Break A Leg". We hadn't heard much about it beforehand, and were pleasantly surprised at how good it turned out to be. The movie was very much in the vein of Altman's "The Player" - about an down-on-his-luck actor who can't get a break, until he finally decides to take matters into his own violent hand. A comedy with dark undertones, it featured some great cameos, wonderful acting, a tight script, and deft direction. It's won numerous awards at other film festivals, but due to the small audience for this screening, likely won't win anything here in Atlanta. I can see this movie getting distribution, though. On another note, it was very nice hanging out with noangelshere who's a very cool chick!
I am looking forward to seeing more movies at the festival. If anyone wants to join me later in the week, just say the word. A friend from film school has a feature screening Tuesday night, so I took off from my trivia show to attend.
She's been working on this project for a number of years, and I'm glad to finally get the chance to see it :)
