I need lots of L.A. help! Trying to decide right now between Santa Monica and the West Hollywood/Loz Feliz area (where most of my friends & contacts live).

Thoughts?

What are the pros/cons of each? How far apart are they?

Loz Feliz is supposedly more artsy/funky/hip, and lots of the people I know live around there. Seem to be a lot of creative types, and many industry folk. I've been told it's about 30 minutes inland, away from the beach.

Santa Monica is, of course, the beach, and that's the reason I want to live there. I know one or two people there. Julie Oshins loves it....she's a few blocks from the beach. It's a bigger city, more touristy, and has a different culture. More beach culture than artsy culture. Really, the only reason to live here is because of the beach, but it's a compelling argument.

I'm biased in that I'm a Hollywood girl at heart, so of course, I'm going to vote Silverlake/Los Feliz/WeHo.

Proper LA neighborhoods like the ones I just mentioned (well, technically West Hollywood is its own city, but just ignore that for now) are more "raw" and down to earth, I think, than West LA, Brentwood, and Santa Monica. Not that there's anything wrong with the latter, but there are a lot of chain stores and stucco and did I mention, really bad drivers? :P

A lot of it will depend on where you end up working as well. You don't want to end up living in one part of the city and working clear on the other side or else the commute will eat away at you.

If you haven't already, check the rental listings on Craigslist.org.

Another thought - if you are bringing the doggies, West Hollywood is by far the most dog friendly area in Southern California. They're kinda strict on the poop bags (you MUST have two extra poop bags with you at all times), but it isn't too bad finding pet-friendly apartments, and there are a ton of restaurants that have outdoor seating areas to eat with your pets.

Also, there is a HUGE dog park in Hollywood that is very cool and a great workout. (It's actually Errol Flynn's old estate.)
