i'm still a brit by birth

And every time the UK leaks out into international news i am re-ashamed of what an utterly trash country it is. The latest facepalm is the American liberals who are cheering what appears to be a well-deserved thrashing of the Conservative party in the UK elections, except unfortunately the so-called Labour party under Starmer is useless too.

Starmer is anti-trans.
Starmer is pro-Brexit.
Starmer is anti-immigrant.
Starmer supports the Israeli invasion of Gaza.
Green investment? Slashed. Left-wing candidates? Blocked. Joining picket lines? Banned.

Any party that pretends to be in opposition to the conservatives but then wheels out the same tired policies is not a serious liberal opposition. Americans should be mindful of that when they see opportunistic Democrats trying to win the votes of xenophobes and transphobes by embracing anti-immigrant rhetoric or "just asking questions" on trans rights. Defeating the shitbags by turning around and becoming a shitbag yourself is no victory at all.

You know, i generally consider myself fairly pragmatic when it comes to politics. I'm willing to accept differences in ideology leading to differing priorities in government. That's what it means to live in a democracy. We get to openly debate the issues and try different approaches, while holding people accountable who do not play fair. But recently seems like there's a bipartisan effort to always throw the same people under the bus... and those people are me! I AM THE PEOPLE UNDER THE BUS!

I am a migrant. I am a trans person. The manufactured culture wars that target people like me are targeting some of the smallest and least powerful minorities, trying to hype us up as a singular and sinister force of evil that's somehow secretly controlling everything... but how can that be when even the mainstream media publishes editorials worrying about us, when politicians on both major parties waffle over whether we deserve equal rights? Who the fuck are you all to decide whether we are allowed to be treated as human beings? It's shameful. Meanwhile there is an ACTUAL minority of people who have outsized influence on the world and they're not migrants or trans people, they're THE FUCKING RICH. Like. Come on. It's not rocket science, it's been like this for thousands of years.

So, i get the libertarian perspective that the rich earned their wealth and deserve to enjoy it. I get the conservative perspective that the rich have always had power historically so they should continue to have power so we can maintain the status quo. But i absolutely do not get the so-called liberal or progressive angle of "well the rich are bad and everything, but trans people are worse". Miss me with that shit.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
