Last weekend i did not go out and do anything because i realized it would be my last chance to have a weekend in before what will be an exhausting business trip. But in reality this weekend is my last chance. The difference is that this weekend i knew i would be distracted by planning, or at least what little planning i actually do ( Read more... )

I think it's a tech industry thing. This is the third company i worked for that had annual all-hands gatherings. It's a way to get people who work from home or in disparate offices around the world together to try align them all and make them feel like they are part of something bigger, i suppose. It's definitely toughest on support and other on-call teams, because they need to make sure someone is keeping an eye on stuff even while the events are going on. But in the tech industry a lot of these on-call guys are used to working from home, or a coffee shop, or a bar, because shit can go down any time day or night, so i suppose it's not any different to bring their laptops to a company social event.

The actual company all-hands is only about 4 days in Greece, and i think it's mostly going to be team building/corporate retreat kinda stuff. But the departmental meet-up beforehand is going to be a more serious working week where we get the chance to hash out roadmap for 2024 while we're all in the same room and the same timezone, which will be nice.

You're right that the challenge is finding "me time" in the middle of it. When your whole team is staying in the same hotel and going to the same office you also end up eating breakfast together, eating dinner together, doing other "after work" stuff together, and there's no real escape. Last year i skipped out of most of the after work dos and i think it was okay because a bunch of "otaku" from the Taiwan office felt the same way i did, but this time we have more guys coming from elsewhere in Europe so...
