the gays are coming!

It's been a tiring week and i'm not sure why. Yeah, it's end of the quarter. Yeah, we had a product release and even working as an internal-focused team there are some trickle-down effects on our stuff. But... i dunno, it's something else. Maybe i'm just on one of my bipolar down-swings? I felt exhausted and run down for most of the week ( Read more... )

I also loved Ugly Betty. It was sweet and really blase about the fact that people... exist. Gorgeous and not-gorgeous. Different colors, languages, backgrounds, beliefs, values, ages, wants.... just.. people are individuals, and people are most hilarious when they take themselves too seriously.

The drama was so canned and silly and not necessarily meant to be rude and hurtful it was just for play....just for shits and giggles. Very soap opera.

It was almost like a live-action (early) Simpsons... anything could happen, but everything was going to be okay.

Hope you made it out to the DJ set.

I hope you made it out

I did! It was great! One of the most eclectic sets i have ever heard out at a club. Not what i was expecting, but somehow even better than getting exactly what i wanted. Everything from aggressively undanceable IDM to loopy djembe rhythms to Spanish folk songs to ambient jungle noises that went on for minutes at a time while everyone kinda wondered if he was taking the piss... and then the bass drum! Fantastic! It reminded me of techno from the days before all the subgenres ossified.

That sounds so great!

Where I grew up and live... there was never much of a chance to see/feel a real techno/club scene. You have gay bars playing extended mixes in their dance room but... nothing really exciting.

My only experience was a backwoods pop-up rave in a logging-equipment storage warehouse, which was hella impressive actually... and only years later found out it was DJ Shadow running the main room of that party on his way to Coachella that year. I didn't know anything except it was way better than the shitty techno remix dance room at the local gay club.

Yeah, dance music or electronic music or whatever you want to call it is a pretty expansive genre these days. I mean, it already was even by the end of the 1980s (which is when synths really became affordable to the average person), but now so much stuff has bled over into mainstream pop that clever or unique production tricks that once upon a time might have been the hallmark of a particular sub-sub-genre are just part of the broader musical landscape today. So then it becomes a bit more about intent than the instruments, i suppose ( ... )

Like with a live band... there is an ability to bend their music to the crowd and vice-versa... but as a one-[hu]man-band I experienced a huge range control over the shape of the sound and volume (in a way a single singer/songwriter doesn't have with their guitar or piano + voice) they also had so much more control of the mood/energy of the room ( ... )
