I'm on a boat! Well, a ferry. A proper roro ferry where you can go upstairs and there is even a little snack bar inside. Everyone i spoke to in the hostel took water taxis to and from the mainland, which admittedly are much faster and only a little more expensive, but they don't seem as fun to me, sitting in a little boat just zooming over to shore ( Read more... )

No need to apologize for having a rant, that's what LiveJournal is for!

Thank you for giving me a bit of a reality check. You are definitely correct that height is a natural advantage here. I have been pickpocketed twice, and my house has been broken into twice, and i've experienced catcalls and insults and groping and even had a few unpleasant things lobbed at me from a distance... but so far as an adult i have never had to face someone with a weapon threatening me for money, or just beating me up for the hell of it. But that has happened to people i know, and thinking about it they were often smaller people, who do come across as easier targets for a solo attacker.

I think - aside from my height and male-passing privilege - the other privilege i have as a traveler is that i can pick and choose the times i take a risk. If i feel that a place is too shady for me, then i just don't go that way, or i stay back at the hotel that night. I can afford to skip an evening meal and wait for morning, head out to somewhere better. It's a different story when people live in the place, and they have no choice but to walk through that shady area every day to get to or from work, school or just the shops. I also think being a local allows people to learn your patterns and your weaknesses. I think that's one of the reasons why i prefer traveling to living in the same place, it feels safer to me when nobody knows who i am.
