I've spoken to some people in my circles who are LGBT activists about this before, and they agreed that this was well-intentioned but perhaps not the best way to go about it. Even if it is just an opt-in, it still feels like it's creating uncomfortable situations for people who actually are trans or non-binary (whether closeted/stealth or just shy) and don't want to have those conversations.
Unfortunately i think this is very common in the tech industry. There is a lot of "activism" that goes on at work, usually just coming from a handful of self-proclaimed activists who are all trying to outdo one another with how "progressive" or "inclusive" they are. I think it's an over-correction to try make up for the historical domination of men in our industry, but i feel like we could do it in a way that would be less disruptive to workers (who maybe are minorities and don't want to be singled out) just trying to earn a paycheck. It feels indulgent. I can't imagine this happening in industries where there wasn't so much venture capital flying around.
