A Chinese surgeon here was telling me that he got up really early to watch the Beijing parades on the internet. So patriotic! Reminds me of the Brits in 1980s HK glued to the live broadcast of the Charles & Diana wedding.
I don't get patriotism at all. I guess it's slightly more understandable amongst expats, though. Especially in another part of the world with different weather and food and language, where the "locals" perhaps don't treat you very well... I can imagine a bit of home country pomp and pride could be a comfort.
