Bands: Hairy Pie/Malkovich/Some Girls/Aux Raus
Venue: Winston, Amsterdam
Date: March 23rd, 2006
Admission Fee: 7 euros

The Winston is a very small venue right in the middle of Amsterdam. It is more of a bar then a club, so it was quickly filled up with people that night, which was abit annoying cause I could hardly stand with a beer in my hand. Anyway, the first band was a Dutch hardcore band called Hairy Pie. They were enthusiastic and pretty tight, but the singer sounded too much the same to make an overwhelming impression. The songs were alright, although a bit short most of the time.

Then Malkovich hit the stage! I already reviewed an earlier show of them on here and I believe I gave them a high grade, which I will do once again. The first song they had to warm up a bit, but from then on an amazing freight train wreaked havoc in the small venue. They sure have some incredibly songs. The music is different from almost any other band in this genre, varying from some sort of rock n roll to stonerrock to grunge, but then on hardcore speed. Really interesting band and I can't wait for their new album to come out. They are touring all around Europe now with Some Girls, so check them out if you can.

Talking about Some Girls: dude did they suck. I was rather hopeful at first, seeing that they had ex-members of The Locust, The Plot To Blow Up the Eiffel Tower and Undertaken, but that hope quickly ran out of the door. They had some decent songs, but the music was SO EFFIN LOUD I can still hear my ears whirling around themselves. The songs lacked any direction or originality and the almost all the band members looked around as if they hated us all and that they were miserable because they had to perform. The only cool dude was the drummer, who looked like he plays in Fear Factory in his spare time. The singer had apparently studied a lot of Oasis dvd's, because he had a Gallagher pose Noel and Liam would have been proud of. They ended with a song that kept going and going and going and all he was singing was either "A! A! A! A!" (trying to say the alfabet but not making it past the first letter) or "HEY! HEY! HEY! HEY!" (saying Hi to everyone in the room?) and they KEPT GOING AND GOING AND GOING and it was WAY TOO LOUD. It was almost as if we were part of some strange experiment, like watching a really sick movie that makes you want to get up and commit suicide by choking in your own vomit but you just cant get up. I think evil forces were at work here. All in all a great disappointment and the more I think about that show the more I dislike it.

Closing off the night was Aux Raus, a Dutch technopop duo. Imagine very 'wrong' elektronic techno tunes mixed with electric guitar and an enthusiastic screaming bald dude. It was comical and cool to dance to. Nothing serious but sure a lot of fun, nice closing act, especially after the misery imposed on us by Some Girls. The Dutch acts definitely whooped some American ass here, especially Malkovich.

Hairy Pie: 5/10
Malkovich 8,5/10
Some Girls: 3/10
Aux Raus: 6,5/10
