I had a couple of friends over yesterday for hanging out, food and watching a movie. I made 2 kinds of pasta, one hot, the other "cheesy", and I was very happy to see 7 people eat food that would be enough for at least 12. We even had an ice cream afterwords. Boy am I glad I managed to get my entire workout program done before everyone came.
After dinner we settled down in my theater to watch "Oceans 11", a movie I like a lot, and which 2 people actually hadn't seen yet. 0:53:30 into the film, it failed. None of the 4 players I tried (And believe me, turning lights on and connecting hardware in the middle of a presentation bothered me enough already) was able to play the movie from that specific chapter onward. Having a closer look at the disc, it seemed as if it had been swimming in coke or something, only that the wet and sticky looking ring was inside the disc. It's probably simply taking in air. I watched this same disc only a couple of weeks ago. It still worked then.
After that the evening was pretty much over, and everybody left, leaving me a bit sad. I know nobody is mad or angry, they didn't even seem disappointed. But I am. The theater is my hobby, my baby, the thing I've been working for and on for years now. These things happen, but it bothered me that I couldn't "fix" it. I know I still have the (yes, illegal) copy that I've been using before I bought the original disc. I just didn't see me finding it in an acceptable time, including setting up the machinery needed to play it.
There's still a lot of work to be done, most has to do with cataloging. But I should also REALLY get back to finishing a project I started together with Tabalon a while ago: Making back ups of ALL our DVDs. Too bad the realization comes only days after it as been announced that hard discs will be costing a fortune for the next 6 months.
Also: I do not recommend buying low-price retail media. You don't get a booklet, and you obviously get crappy media. It's not the first disc failing me that way.
