Today at work I read
The Art of Eric Carle about Eric Carle, the duder ho who wrote The Hungry Caterpillar (book i didn't really like as a kid, but now as a graphic artist i appreciate fully). The biography in the book is written by him and it's pretty sweet, he talks about his childhood quite a lot and the imagery he remembers. He mentions remembering big brushes and room full of light in the American school he attended early on (probably kindergarten?) and compares it to the dark, narrow classroom (and also the corporal punishment) of the German school he attended. But he also never fails to mention his art teacher in Germany who showed him art of forbidden artists, Picasso, Chagall, expressionists etc and told him "remember their loose and free way of drawing." His teacher risked his life to show Carle those paintings and he never forgot that.
