Lead Actor in a Comedy Series
Last Year's Nominees:
Jim Parsons - Winner
Steve Carell
Alec Baldwin
Tony Shalhoub
Matthew Morrison
Larry David
My 2011 Predictions
Jim Parsons
Steve Carell
Alec Baldwin
*Matthew Morrison
*Joel McHale
*Matt LeBlanc
Louie C.K.
Danny McBride
Right now, without knowing what HitFix has to say about this category, I'm placing my bets on Morrison, McHale, and LeBlanc to grab nominations. I don't believe Glee will take many hits on July 14th but if they did lose out on some noms from last year, it'd be Morrison getting cut. In that case, I'm thinking Louie C.K. will manage to slip in to the race. Matt LeBlanc is a familiar actor and an Emmy fave so without much competition in this category I would not be surprised at all to hear his name read. I fully expect Community to earn a couple of nominations this year, and Joel has the best chance to earn an actor nom. There's literally no one else to nominate. Unless the Emmys decide to honor another critical darling over Community. (which is always a possibility)
As for who will ultimately take home the prize? It's going to come down to Jim Parsons and Steve Carell. I favor Carell to finally get the win for his farewell season on The Office. The Emmys do take into account the fact that it's someone's final season when it comes to the nominees, but does that still hold weight when it comes time to choose a winner? For Carell, I think yes. Unless the Emmys secretly hate him.
Lead Actress in a Comedy Series
Last Year's Nominees
Edie Falco - Winner
Toni Collette
Lea Michelle
Amy Poehler
Tina Fey
Julia Louis-Dreyfus
My 2011 Predictions
Edie Falco
Laura Linney
Lea Michelle
Amy Poehler
Tina Fey
Toni Collette
Martha Plimpton
*Melissa McCarthy
Patricia Heaton
Kaley Cuoco
Courteney Cox
Laura Linney will certainly slide in with most of last year's nominees and might actually be the one to beat. Edie Falco will return to try to defend her title. There's no way Tina Fey won't be on the ballot and with Parks and Recreation at it's strongest this year, Amy Poehler will be back. Like I said above, Glee might take some hits this year, but it won't be in this category. Lea Michelle will be back as a nominee.
But for that 6th spot, it's hard to say. United States of Tara was recently canceled and might be enough to keep Toni Collette on the ballot. If it's not, there's several actresses primed to step in in her spot. Raising Hope has a strong chance of earning a nomination with Martha Plimpton, but equally likely (and possibly more now) is Melissa McCarthy for Mike & Molly. Someone's obviously noticed her if she was tapped to announce the nominees. Patricia Heaton is an old Emmy favorite and the Emmy voters sure like familiar faces. There's an outside chance that Kaley Cuoco will earn her show a second Emmy nom, though it's a very small chance in the face of her competition. Courteney Cox could be nominated. If Emmy voters actually took notice of Cougar Town. Or you know, her.
My bet goes to Melissa McCarthy taking the 6th spot. Joshua Jackson announcing may not lead to anything for Fringe but there's no way both announcers come away empty-handed.
