Venting over Writing Struggles

Jul 21, 2010 16:19

Just had to get this out.

Why do I keep doing this? WHY? I've heard a lot of writers complain about having more plot bunnies than time to write them, and I've certainly had that problem, but lately (and by lately I mean since April) I've had less plot bunnies and more plot Godzillas. X| It's terrible!

I've managed to get out a few ficlets and drabbles for Community this summer, but most of my writing time is spent working on two massive AUs which just last week turned into three. Yes, a third massive AU storyline popped into my head while reading someone else's fic. I HATE THIS!

Because the thing with wrestling multi-chapter AUs, is you can work forever on them and get nowhere. :P This is why I won't officially post anything on them. Well that and I keep changing my mind with formatting and order of events. I've sent my friend some stuff to read, but it sucks and I'm still trying to re-work it.

Here's the low-down on these three devil incarnates:

1) Opening the Box - a ridiculously AU idea I got for Big Bang Theory way back in December posing the question "What if Penny and Leonard had grown up together in Nebraska?"
Besides the obvious problems of setting this up and filling in a lot of the currently unknown backstory for these two characters, I am also having HUGE problems figuring out how to tell this story. That's actually the biggest thing holding me back right now because most of the backstory is done. I just don't know how to present it. :(

2) Untitled - Penny attends Greendale Community College
A Big Bang Theory/Community crossover that is an AU season 4(BBT)/season 2 (Community)fic that has Penny running away from California and ending up in Colorado, at Greendale, taking Anthropology (and other classes). The rest is fairly obvious. I'm only going to keep Penny there for the first semester, but along the way she's going to start working things out with Leonard and possibly (probably) uncovering a secret relationship between Jeff and Annie. Actually this piece is going okay, I'm just having a little trouble with pacing and balancing the two storylines while keeping it all in Penny's POV. But I completely bombed the beginning chapter. It was too much Penny observing and reacting to the study group and not any discussion or development of her plot. I didn't even set it up. :S

3) Untitled - Uh.... AU that completely bastardizes season 1 of Community by adding a secret kid. Yeah.
This is the one intro I'm actually kind of happy with. My problem with this piece is I have no fracking clue where to go with it. o_0 I'm not really working on this piece much, partly because it was the third plot bunny to crop up and partly because I feel the plot is weak. Strong premise. Weak plot. *shrugs*

If I could only get the intro for the crossover down, I could properly take off on it and maybe even finish it before classes start next month. *sigh*
