Curriculum

So, after a month of homeschooling, I've tweaked my curriculum and I think I have a very doable program, relaxed yet rigorous. Three days a week, four hours a day (an hour of which is taken up by recess and lunch).

Can I hire you???

:D

Seriously, that sounds like a really great curriculum. I'm going to look up those Kumon workbooks you're talking about. My kids are slow with math.

Problem is they got years behind while living with their mom and while they have caught up quite a great deal in the last 3 years, not having a strong knowledge of the foundations is hurting them. Maybe those would be a good idea!

While researching homeschooling in general and Kumon in particular, I discovered that kids who have missed the fundamentals of math will be assigned very simple work by the Kumon tutors. Even if you're in seventh grade math, if they feel you need work on simple addition, they start you in the first or second grade work. A 12-year-old will just work through it quicker. But, it's drill, drill, drill until you get it.

What did you think of the Kumon program. It sounds to me like something mine could benefit from.

I like Kumon because it is a very slow, logical progression with lots of practice. On the other hand, Claudia really likes workbooks. If your kids don't like that kind of work, they will hate it.

While researching it, though, I read about many people who managed to get their kids up to grade level within 9 months to a year, and then they stopped it.

Hi Amy,
I like your curriculum outline. I homeschool both my boys. Bryan graduated a year early, we are having a party for him this Sunday and Calvin is starting the 8th grade.

How have you been? How is the family doing?

Miss you
