Notes: Having a heckish day--thought, 'what would Gene Hunt do?'
"Here. This is for you." Gene dropped a battered brown bag on Sam's desk. He leaned back, crossed his arms, and waited. "Oi! Leave off the paperwork, Tyler. I don't bring gifts every day, do I?"
Sam looked up. The bag was shoddily tied shut with a ribbon. "Did you get that ribbon from the girl we just interviewed?"
"The prozzie? No." Gene looked affronted and made a show of examining his nails.
"It wasn't in her hair?"
"No."
"So, if I went down there, I wouldn't find her with her hair a mess?" Sam laid the file aside.
"Would you just open the present before it..."
The bag was moving.
"Gene?"
"Oh, bloody well open it, would you?"
"I don't know that I want to..."
"If you don't, I'll keep the bloody thing for myself. I probably want it more, anyway."
A yellow liquid began leaking from the sack. "Oh, shit!" Sam dove for his paperwork. Gene grabbed the sack and made cooing noises at it.
He undid the ribbon. A furry yellow head poked out and licked his face. "It's a puppy," Sam said.
"Look at you, the big detective," Gene said as he nuzzled the pup.
"I always wanted a puppy," Sam said. He reached for it. Gene clutched the dog and angled himself away from Sam's arms.
"Oh no--you didn't want to open my present. He's mine now." He grinned as the puppy licked him again. "I was having a bad day and the missus suggested I do something nice for someone to make myself cheer up. Have to say, it worked. I feel tons better now."
"But you didn't do anything--"
"I showed you not to be suspicious of my gifts, didn't I?"
"Yes, guv."
"And you'll not doubt me again, will you?"
"No, guv."
"Good. Now go out and get some food for Barney here."
"Guv..."
"Unless you want him to have another go at your paperwork."
"I'm going."
