Cat Stories for the Feline Inclined
Fandom seems to be filled with cat lovers who inevitably write stories about cats. Being fond of my own cats, I can’t quarrel with the practice (though I still haven’t found any stories for those of us who love our Scotties). So in honor of Ella and Mathilda (my own feline companions), here are my favorite cat podfics:
The Obligatory Kitten Fiction (Supernatural) -- The author summarizes the story as “Castiel is a cat, witches suck, Gabriel shows up and Sam just wants to eat lettuce” or as Dean says, "You know, when the angel that brought you back from hell shows up and then turns into a kitten? That's the Winchester Effect.” And a dog story from the same reader because I can’t resist: Rescue -- A de-deified, post-season 6 Castiel has settled into domesticity with Dean. A hunt for the ghost of a vegan, animal-abuser-killing vet leads to Cas’ adoption of a condemned pit bull despite Dean’s reluctance:
"Cas," he says, "they're not going to let you take the angry puppy no matter how bad you feel for him because he's a menace to society."
"I was a menace to society once," Cas reminds him calmly, though with an underlying edge of rumbly angel-scary voice that obviously makes this about Cas's stint as God and seeking redemption for that and not about the horrors of puppy euthanasia at all.
Cas, Dean, and Sam are all clearly damaged in this story but making new, good lives. This is more serious and longer than the others recommended in this post but it’s a feel-good fic all the same.
But the Cat Came Back (XMFC) -- In an Sherlock/XMFC fused world, research scientist Charles suddenly dumps his boyfriend Erik, a secret spy. Bereft, Erik takes in a tweed colored, whiskey-drinking cat that turns up on his doorstep. It’s a fun story with cameos by Emma Frost and the Holmes brothers. The audiobook also has a great cover by palalife.
Murderous, Co-Dependant (Sherlock) -- Clever, witty story focused on Lestrade and his private life. Guilt-ridden for missing his daughter’s birthday, envisioning her “selling drugs or herself and telling every junkie and john she meets and allows to abuse her that the only reason she's like this is because her father - the detective inspector, oh irony of ironies - was shit,” Lestrade adopts two kittens: John and Sherlock.
With my Tail in the Air (Star Trek XI) -- This was already recommended last year but it’s too charming to omit. Captain Kirk is temporarily turned into his spirit animal, a cat, and terrorizes his ship, a few Romulans, and Admiral Pike.
Stargate Atlantis is a fandom with a canon cat-lover in Rodney McKay but also a strange penguin fixation. Two cat stories that made it to podfic are Rodney McKay, Cat Lady of Atlantis and Belling the Cat: Danger Kitty Remix. Both stories use the traditional SGA plot-device -- an ancient device gone wrong and, in this case, turning people into cats. “Cat Lady” is more crack (“But Rodney didn’t really see the affects as adverse. He didn’t even see them as negative in any way at all because when you got right down to it-Ronon made an awesome cat.”) and “Belling the Cat,” set in the Mensa-Verse, is a little more serious, but they’re both fun. If you must have penguins, try Bipeds and the Deep Blue Sea for an enjoyable listen.
