Country To Asian

I've finished another component of my asian inspired living room.  This is the first time I've tried embedding pictures, so apologies in advance for what this may do to your computer screen ;).

The design for these tables came from a picture I found while web-surfing:

I liked the curved elements and the slatted shelves, but I wanted a less country, more asian look.  I built three tables, using one to work out the design elements and finish choices for the other two.  The 'practice table' shows how I changed the design.  The drawer is replaced with curved rails, the shelf is raised above the midpoint of the overall height, and the short rails were extended through the legs.

The final pieces show a few refinements.  I took the tapered curve out of the table top.  Katie said it made it look like a kids' room table and I had to agree.  I capped the through-dowels holding the shelf to get a little more finished look.  And I went to a more natural finish, without quite so much red in it.  I want the cherry to darken on its own over time.

In retrospect, I would have extended the long rails instead of the short ones, to match the way the shelf rails extend beyond the legs.  But for the most part I'm pleased with these.  They have now replaced the TV-tables I was using for end tables in the living room.  I'm not yet sure what the fate of the practice table will be, but I'm sure we can find it a home.

I've uploaded some other samples of my work to my scrapbook, so feel free to browse it if you're interested.
