Holy crap, they're doing the history of Metal on VH1 and I'm reliving my youth.
I was forbidden to watch MTV in the early 80s, as my parents apparently believed it would warp my mind as their drug addictions and domestic violence could not. I remember very clearly that my best friend at about age 10 (a boy, because I was am a tomboy) had the cover of Guns N Roses' "Appetite for Destruction" painted on his wall. I, in my MTV-lessness, was under the impression that they were mildly Satanic (I was 10!).
That year, my brother moved in. He was 17 and a senior in high school. In my mind, he was the essence of cool. He wore puffy shirts like Prince, and dyed his hair orange, and wore eyeliner (it was really a shocker when he came out...really).
My brother loved Madonna, and used to dress me up in Madonna clothes (a la a slutty Jon Benet), which infuriated my parents. He also took to breaking the No-MTV Rule with gusto. I learned quickly all about Madonna, and Cyndi Lauper, and Guns N Roses, and Metallica. I distinctly remember seeing the video for "Enter Sandman" and having nightmares (we got in trouble for that, btw) of getting run over by a semi truck in my bed. And when I first saw the Aerosmith/Run D.M.C. version of "Walk this Way" I literally got up and danced. I stole my brother's Ratt and Quiet Riot cassettes (yeah, RATT and QUIET RIOT--and they're still with me, tucked away in a box!) and played them in my walkman so that I couldn't hear my parents scream at each other.
Wow...that was 17 years ago. And I still love Guns N Roses (and Slash is still God).
