Not Stephen K - but Tori - twice!

Sep 12, 2007 00:33

I think I died and went to heaven... twice. I was privileged enough to score tickets for Tori Amos' concerts, both last night and tonight - and as per, she pulled out two different set lists, two different costumes, different lighting plots for both of the shows, her amazing band, and the energy and raw beauty she reimbues her music with... I actually converted someone who kinda liked her music to a full blown fan last night! S'coz she rocks.

So, without further adieu, playlists!

September 10 2007
As 'Santa':
Body and Soul
God
Dragon
You Can Bring your Dog

Remix of 'Professional Widow' With strobe effects and live drum, base and guitar improv... fucking mad... while Tori went backstage to change from Santa (A little black dress, which god knows how it stayed on!) into Tori (Bronze/Brown sequined full body suit, with flared pants that came down into her shoes...)

Big Wheel
A song about Oz (Possibly Aus) and a play on Oz/Aus and ruby slippers - may have been a legit song, but didn't catch enough of the lyrics to make an informed decision (I now think this is Ruby through the looking glass)
Space Dog - massively rad
Tombigbee
Cornflake Girl - with an introduction to the boys of the band... as per
Bells for her - amazingly, this is not one of my favorite songs, but damn it was powerful... especially the 'Can't stop what's coming, not even you'... very controlled, very beautiful, and haunting... so this may've turned my opinion on this song - not that I ever hated it, but just wasn't one of my favorites
Caught a light sneeze - even without the harpsichord this was sooooo beautiful!
The chords from 'Twinkle' but with lyrics about how Tori couldn't find breakfast in Australia so what do we eat for breakfast?
Winter - I nearly died. Just her, the piano and that unbelievably beautiful song... Took me straight back to a very interesting time in my life and brought back so much I wasn't quite prepared for, but made it all the more compelling.
Taxi Ride
Father's son
Bliss
Code Red
Encore: Precious Things
Tear in your hand - sooooo many things came outta this. Wow.

September 11 2007

As 'Clyde':
Bouncing off of clouds
Little Earthquakes - every single time she sang 'doesn't take much to rip us into pieces'... I felt it... and felt it deep
Juarez
Rattlesnakes - I've never quite got this on the album, it never quite clicked... tonight just slotted in beautifully...
Beauty of Speed

Once again the remix of Professional Widow and the costume change. Tonight Tori was wearing a white sequined full body suit, same as last night, but this time no sleeves. Clyde was wearing a pink similar style thing, but with white wedges.

Big Wheel
Sugar
Crucify - oh - my - god... so much to say, so little time.
Cornflake Girl - again with the intro of the band
Doughnut song - she stretched this out beautifully... and there were just so many moments where I was like 'yeah, that's exactly it'... and unlike in the recorded track where she underplays the difference between 'And if I'm wasting all my time this time' and 'You've been wasting all my time this time', she really drew it out and made something of all that's going on in this song. Fuck, talk layers in the music and the lyrics and whatnot... I love it
Siren
Then we got a lovely song which had elements of the chord sequences from Carbon, but the lyrics were more or less:

'We've all seen it on the news,
but I've got something to say,
Britney they set you up,
But you still sipped from the cup
This is what it looks like - ouch -
when a star falls
You may be a mother,
but you still need a mother
and I may be a mother
but I still need a mother
to pick me up
to pick me up
when it all falls down.' ... which led incredibly into...
Mother - as if this concert could get any better. And Tori was tearful through this one, and the lyrics - once again - got me in a different way, and I was back in Europe again, dealing with it all...
Then there was a technical hitch with the keyboard so Tori asked us not to listen to the song where she was communicating with her crew trying to get them to hook up her 'Yama__' which she couldn't mention given she plays a Bösendorfer... so all in all, it's nice to see she was still thinking on her feet for this kinda impromptu and nice segway
Cool on your Island - complete newcomer to this track... going to track it down tho, it appealed to me
Putting the Damage on - again, not one I'm a huge fan of. But for some reason the 'I'm trying not to move, it's just your ghost passing through' really got me tonight... this got that band back on stage for the rawest:
Some sorta fairytale - I've ever seen... no sweetness, just pain and the raw emotion of the song... BIG drums, big distortion on guitar... and although maybe 2 years ago, I would've hated this version, it spoke streets and miles again... oh I love her, I keep learning!
Code Red
Encore: Precious things
Hey Jupiter - interesting choice to end the night on, but she did a more boppy version than what I'm used to, which was good for the concert, but I learned this song as such a revealing, soft and vulnerable track, I'm not sure I could quite deal with the drums and the up tempo... but that's just me, after all, the vid clip is similarly up.

Interestingly, nothing from Choirgirl hotel or Beekeeper... I'm still dying to see her perform Liquid Diamonds, Raspberry Swirl, Jackie's Strength and most importantly Marianne... but for now, I'll smile secretly to myself.

music, review, tori
