Mudpuppies and lampricide

Oct 10, 2009 11:52

Learned something new today! Mudpuppies are kinda cute. These mudpuppy salamanders are somewhat rare. They are also the collateral damage when the state applies lampricide to kill off the "parasitic lamprey that harm or kill fish". Apparently, the population of harmful lamprey has increased, endangering the lake sturgeon in Lake Champlain.

Seems the state is favoring game fish over the mudpuppies. "These are complex systems we are tinkering with," said one official. Yep.

Now I have something neat to look for when exploring the Lamoille River. Mudpuppies!
