A new year rising...

So it's time for the cabbage, trichinosis, and reflective holiday to grace us once again with its yearly dawning...New Year's has always been an odd holiday for me...it's that one day that I think we are all forced either by our culture or some unconscious tradition to consider our lives and the direction in which they are going.  I am not so sure I've ever really enjoyed the day...so much promise of hope and new beginnings that often tatter in the wind sometime before mid-February.  And every year, I tell myself that this year will be different.  So let's keep with tradition (yes, even I sometimes choose to keep with traditions...it's the Taurus in me).  I was trying to think exactly what I wanted to see this new year bring.  My musing on the thought reminded me that the pain of past years has brought my life into many of the pleasures I have obtained.  Creation, destruction, growth, reemergence...they are all bedmates, and one can never exist without the others.  There are some things that I do wish for and hope this new year will bring with it...some of them hopeful and unrealistic, others are no more than a change in perspective.

To name a few...A new direction for our weary and tired nation...A new direction for our weary and tired souls...Only destruction that brings with it healthy and much needed growth and reemergence...Moments of joy that are so filling and rewarding that we remember them long into 2010...If only for a split-second, peace on earth...A cure for cancer...A cure for HIV/AIDS...A cure for tyranny, inequality, and ignorance...Love, I hope for love...new beginnings, bigger and more enriching journeys...walking down accidental paths that lead to groves that no human has ever seen before...deeper meanings, longer moments of quiet...tears (the good kind and the bad, believe it or not both kinds make us more whole)...life...Life...LIFE....

A phoenix that doesn't burn, at least for once...clean air, clean water, pesticide-free apples...long walks in the park...warm summers and cold winters...a balanced ecosystem...faery dust and pixie footprints in the sand...old songs, new voices...brotherhood, sisterhood, humanhood (?)...sweet whispers of "i love you" that are both sincere and unconditional...the taste of cherry tomatoes straight from the vine...a truly compassionate republican (for once)...the merging of Justice and Forgiveness...a birthday that makes me smile...long conversations over black coffee....food that fills me up...hot showers...freshly bathed dogs (mine in particular) who don't run to the mud puddles...orgasms that are better because they are adjoined to love...love...Love...LOVE.....

There's an African Proverb that says "When Death comes for you, may he find you Alive."  My deepest hope of hopes is that we all live in an "Alive" way in 2009.
