Typical action-movie shlock. A ton of money on effects, not enough attention to character, silly black & white morality, a predictable ending, all wrapped in a bit of patriotic twaddle. Entertaining enough, I suppose, but nothing special.
I wasn't sure what to give it, but I remembered the effects being cool, so I gave it a 7. I do remember not being too highly impressed upon first viewing, though.

one of the greatest marketing campaigns ever. the hype for this movie made me enjoy it that much more. it played right into the whole country's patriotic heart like few movies have.
And you can't front on the scene where will smith punches the alien in the face and says "welcome to earth". I cheer everytime I watch that.
Yeah, this movie was pretty fun in the theater (apart from junk like the reunited lovers story, the final solution, the dog, etc.) But I'm still grading it a 3.
Absolute utter rubbish, I remember cringing quite a lot during this. Waste of money and time all round. Godzilla was bad but at least it had a giant plastic lizard in it...oh wait, Independence Day had several smaller plastic lizardy things in it....oh wait, so did Godzilla. Oh.
Jurassic Park, now that's a good film, lots of plastic lizards, big and small!
