Although Tarkovsky's film is fairly faithful to the book by Stanisław Lem, Lem was dissatisfied with the finished film as he said "I never really liked Tarkovsky's version".To Tarkovsky, who was an admirer of Lem's work, this showed that Lem was not understanding the nature of cinema as an art.
