Chapter One: A Day in the Life...
Inhale. Deep. The scent was intoxicating. A rich, frolicking miasma that filled his nasal passages and rolled out over his tongue like sugared sunshine. It never failed to stir him. Exhale. Slowly. There was nothing like the scent of fully ripened strawberries.
Jaejoong slid the berries into the bottom of the shopping basket he held dangling from his left hand. It already held tomatoes, summer squash, peppers, cucumbers, baby lettuce, icicle radishes and bright green spring onions. Tonight he'd make Doenjang jjigae and a western style green salad.
As he turned from the strawberries, two men crossed Jaejoong's eyesight on the other side of a vegetable bin. Normally he wouldn't give them a second glance, but these men happened to be unusually tall. Jaejoong himself was above average in height but these two topped him by several inches.
Jaejoong was not a person who had any shame. So, not caring if they caught him at it, Jaejoong openly looked them over. People watching was one of his hobbies.
Gay. Was his first thought. The one in front is obviously the seme. Glasses, full lips. Not particularly attractive by Jae's way of thinking. The one in back is the uke. Younger. Nice face from what I can see of it. Beautiful lips. Studying them he thought, Uke never gets his dick wet. Followed by, I wonder where Uke got that shirt? Judging by what Seme is wearing, it wasn't a gift from his lover. Seme and Uke became their names in Jaejoong's mind. He watched as Uke followed behind Seme. Always with his head down. There were bruises peeking out below the sleeve of Uke's t-shirt and he flinched a little when Seme made a sudden move. Seme is into pain. Not in a way that Uke enjoys. Abusive. Something about them seemed slightly familiar. I think they live in our building.
Shrugging, Jaejoong went back to his shopping. He felt no sympathy for the young man he had dubbed Uke. Didn't give him a second thought once his interest in watching them ended.
The truth was that Jaejoong was incapable of feeling sympathy. In fact, he never felt much of anything. Not sympathy. Not Joy or sadness. Not fear. Not hope. Not empathy. He pitied no one. He felt nothing for anyone, not even himself.
Jaejoong was an island in a sea of humanity. He was Alcatraz and its only prisoner.
Out of the corner of his eye he spotted a rare display of red gold.
Raspberries. The little market near his apartment rarely ever had them. The truth of that was borne out by the small gathering of housewives and grandmothers surrounding the stand they rested upon. There weren't many cartons left, maybe half a dozen or so and making his way over to procure himself a portion of the edible rubies on display Jaejoong shifted the basket to his other hand in case he needed to elbow his way into the crowd. He had no intention of hurting anyone but he would shoulder them aside without a second thought.
Raspberries were his favorite.
Luckily his pretty face earned him a space without the need for muscles. All it took was a shy smile and a polite murmur of “Excuse me” and he was in.
In fact, the ladies were so dazzled that by moving quickly, he was able to load his basket with the remaining fruit before they noticed what was happening. Plastering a megawatt smile on his face Jaejoong bowed and made his quick way out of the produce department before they came to their senses, the fake smile gone before he was.
Once he and his loot were far enough away Jaejoong stopped and brought one of the shallow containers up to his face. Closing his eyes he took a deep breath through his nose.
Even better than the strawberries.
If roses were a fruit they would be a raspberry. Raspberries tasted the way roses smelled.
There weren't many things that Jaejoong took even a small measure of enjoyment in. In fact, there were really only three. Cooking and shopping for ingredients were two of them. Music was the other.
Usually he preferred to shop alone so that he could take his time and enjoy it. He would feel and smell everything before he bought it. Judging ripeness and beauty and anticipating the delicious dishes he would make with whatever edible gems he stumbled across.
Today though he wasn't alone. His boyfriend Kangin was with him. As soon as they arrived Jaejoong had sent the other man across the store with a list and snuck off to rendezvous with the produce.
Now that he was done it was time to find his boyfriend.
“Jae!”
Turning Jaejoong saw his boyfriend approaching, his own basket full of the items Jae had sent him to get.
As Kangin caught up to Jae he asked, “You ready?”
At Jaejoong's nod they headed for the checkout counter.
Picking the shortest line brought them in behind Seme and Uke. For a split second Jaejoong's eyes met those of Uke. Almost immediately Uke lowered his gaze.
Jaejoong noted that the corner's of Seme's mouth tightened at the contact.
Uke's in trouble now. Meeting Seme's gaze Jaejoong was mildly surprised to find no trace of lust in the eyes of the other man. Jae knew the effects he had on gay men (and some of the straight ones) especially those who liked to dominate others and he saw none of that reflected in the orbs staring back at him. All that was visible on Seme's face was an intense expression of dislike.
Jaejoong's mind quickly shied away from the memories that look engendered. He hadn't consciously thought about that in a long time.
Feeling Kangin grip his hand and give it a squeeze Jaejoong looked into his boyfriends eyes to see understanding and a quiet reminder that Jaejoong had left all of that behind.
Kangin always knows. He knew Jaejoong as well as Jaejoong knew himself.
Watching Kangin eye Uke with sadness Jaejoong knew his lover was wishing he could help. Where Jae felt no compassion, Kangin cared too much for others. At least in Jaejoong's opinion.
In the parking lot Jaejoong ignored Kangin's pleas for him to hurry up as he gently arranged the groceries so that his treasures wouldn't get crushed or bruised.
Kangin was just teasing his lover. He knew. He knew how little Jaejoong felt. No way in hell would he ruin Jaejoong's enjoyment of something.
Groceries finally arranged to his satisfaction, Jaejoong straightened and caught sight of Seme and Uke across the parking lot. They were arguing next to a bright red sports car. Seme was clearly mad and Uke was frantically denying...something. Jae watched as Seme slapped Uke hard across the face causing the lighter man to fall against their car. Digging his fingers into Uke's arm, the other man jerked him around and shoved him into the low-slung crimson vehicle. Uke was barely in before the door was slammed shut.
“Do you know them?” Kangin had come up behind Jaejoong without the other being aware of it. He too was staring after the arguing couple.
“No, I was just watching them.” Jaejoong left out that he thought the pair lived in the same building that he and Kangin lived in. They both knew Uke was in for a rough night and he wouldn't put it past Kangin to go door to door looking for them. As far as Jaejoong was concerned, Uke's problems were Uke's problems. He had raspberries to savor.
“Lets go home.”
Sitting in as unobtrusive a way as his lanky frame would allow Changmin desperately wanted to touch his throbbing cheek, but he knew that if he did so his boyfriend would accuse him of pouting and get even angrier.
He had made a mistake.
Standing in line behind Shikyung, Min had sensed someone join the line behind them and had automatically glanced up. Naturally, his boyfriend had chosen that moment to turn to him with a comment. Changmin wondered what his lover had been about to say. He never found out because Shikyung saw him look at the stranger and it had set him off.
It didn't help that the man was gorgeous. When Shikyung got jealous at Min's “flirting”, Min's punishment was usually directly proportionate to how attractive the other party was. Changmin almost whimpered when he thought about what lay in store for him.
Shikyung was driving aggressively, speeding, weaving in and out of traffic. He even ran a red light. A sure sign that he was enraged. Changmin hoped that the reckless driving would take the edge off of his boyfriend's anger before they got home. As terrifying as riding with a blazing mad Shikyung could be, Changmin was more afraid of what would happen when the vehicle came to a stop.
He almost hoped that they wrecked instead.
Well, they didn't wreck. And it looked to Changmin like Shikyung had released a little of his anger in the drive home. Just how much was the question. Min could see that he was still mad.
Changmin was tense. Shikyung wasn't saying anything as Changmin followed him up the stairs and into their apartment. That was bad.
As soon as they set their groceries down Shikyung grabbed Changmin by the hair and dragged him down the hall towards the bedroom. Min was scared. He knew Shikyung used the bedroom because it was at the back of the apartment and their neighbors were less likely to hear any sounds that Changmin might make when he was being punished.
As Min stumbled along behind his boyfriend, he tried his hardest not to bump into any of the furniture they passed. If he broke something he would be in even more trouble.
Min couldn't contain a cry as he was thrown against the wall. He had no chance to recover because Shikyung immediately started in on him. Instinctively protecting his head with his arms, Changmin tried to make himself into as small a target as possible, words and blows raining down upon him in equal measure.
“WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO ME?! YOU FUCKING SLUT! I SAW THE WAY YOU LOOKED AT HIM! YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU! DO YOU ENJOY HURTING ME LIKE THAT?!”
At least he was using an open hand instead of his fists.
Finally, after what seemed like hours, the blows and the yelling stopped.
Shikyung heaved a tired sigh, “You know this is your fault right?”
“I know baby, I know. I'm sorry.” Min felt weak with relief. It was over.
Taking Changmin's face in his hands Shikyung pressed a kiss to Min's trembling lips. “Why do you make me hurt you? You know I hate to see you hurt.”
“I'm sorry Shikyung. Its all my fault. It won't happen again.”
“Promise?”
“I promise. You're all I need.”
“Then I forgive you.” He gave Changmin another kiss.
“You're probably tired after our fight”, he said with concern. “Why don't we skip the movie and stay in tonight?”
Min nodded, making sure to maintain eye contact. “That sounds like a good idea.”
“Then why don't you find us something to eat while I take a quick shower?” Changmin watched as his boyfriend began to get undressed.
“How does jajjangmyeon sound?” It was a struggle to keep his voice even.
“Perfect.” Shikyung made his way towards the bathroom. “Love you baby.”
“I love you too.”
As the bathroom door closed on his lover's nude form Min heaved a shaky sigh. Tears welled up, but never spilled over.
Pushing himself up with the help of the wall Min made his painful way over to the mirror above the dresser. Straightening his clothes and raking his hair into a more presentable state, Changmin cleaned himself up. Shikyung hated to see signs of their fights.
Luckily, he wasn't bleeding this time.
Knowing Shikyung would be out of the shower soon, Changmin headed towards the kitchen to make dinner. He hated jajjangmyeon, but Shikyung liked it and that was what was important.
