Challenge Parameters: Create a starter fic rec list for someone new to fandom - this should contain at least 15 recs and reasons for the recs.
Steve Rogers/Tony Stark
1)
valtyr: Tomorrow Belongs To Me Summary: Steve wakes up in the 21st Century. He doesn't think much of it, and it's dubious about him. He meets a Norse God, joins a superhero team, and feels terribly awkward about the whole monument at Arlington he's rendered obsolete by not being dead. Meanwhile, Tony is trying to make his mark on history by being the man who finally drove Nick Fury over the edge.
Reason for rec: This was one of the best Steve/Tony relationship fics I've read. It has a interesting plot, great character voices, and it's 80k words long. Great for reading when you're stuck on an airplane, or in a airport.
2)
valtyr: Some Assembly Required Summary: Tony Stark is trying to set up a new superhero team when he's given a sex change, courtesy of Victor von Doom. He copes with that about as well as you'd expect.
Reason for rec: The sex was hot, the character voices were spot on, and I loved the introduction of the other super heroes. :) I added this story to the list because it has genderbending, it introduces characters from the comics, the plot is interesting, and the character voices felt spot on.
3)
Average Avengers Local Chapter 7 of New York City Summary: Steve and Tony accidentally start a national do-gooders association and fall in love.
Reason for rec: This was sweet, awe inspiring, and I loved the concept. I'm reccing it because it's a rare story that can say so much in so few words. It also does a great job of showing Steve Rogers as he is and how inspiring he can be.
4)
scifigrl47 - Some Things Shouldn't Be a ChoreSummary: Steve takes things like personal responsibility and respect seriously. Tony's got people he pays to take care of that kind of thing, and anyway, he's pretty sure that he's going to die of some exotic disease in his workshop, because Dummy's still a little spotty about what is 'clean' enough to put on an open wound. The rest of the Avengers are in this for personal gain, except for Clint, he just enjoys being a dick.
And some things shouldn't be a chore.
Reason for rec: This is a great introduction to Tony Stark's robots and the series is rather epic.
5)
Amuly - America isn't Chicken Summary: After a Civil War, death, rebirth, a takeover by Osborn, brain deletion, and the fall of Asgard, Steve and Tony might just be starting to get back on solid ground with one another. Things aren't perfect, not yet, but they can be in the same room as each other without resorting to violence, and they've even managed to share a smile or two.
Seems like the perfect time, then, for Tony to try and fuck it all up with a stupid game of gay chicken.
Meanwhile, as if he didn't have enough to worry about, Tony realizes some kind of supervillainous trouble is brewing when increasingly advanced armors start popping up all over Manhattan, looking strangely reminiscent of his tech. On the other side of the world, Steve gets news that Zola is on the move in Russia, with some sort of nefarious plan at work.
Which will ruin them first? Will it be this unknown armored villain who is after Tony's tech? Or will it be Zola unleashing his mysterious plan on the world? Or will Steve and Tony prove to be their own worst enemies, destroying the tentative truce they managed to forge with their own stubbornness?
Reason for rec: I loved the plot/case, the build up to the sex was incredibly hot, and I loved the tension between Tony and Steve. I was also amused that for "straight" guys they had some rather kinky sex during this long game of gay chicken. All in all, this story had emotional impact and it made me cry. This story is a great intro to how Steve/Tony can be a complex couple and their many issues.
Clint Barton/Darcy Lewis
6)
LJC - Simple, Not Easy Summary: Darcy should have seen it coming. She couldn't hang around the spandex crowd forever and not end up with a great big target painted on her back eventually. She was just surprised it took Loki so long.
Reason for rec: Darcy character voice was spot on and awesome. I loved the how she and Loki became friends and seeing how the Avengers dealt with Loki trying to improve.
7)
twistedingenue - The B-Team Summary: Alternate Universes are rarely better than your own. This one is no exception. Clint and Natasha find themselves in a universe where the Avengers don't exist, SHIELD is holding on by the barest thread, and the only people able to keep things together are a very different group of unlikely heroes.
Reason for rec: I absolutely loved the concept and seeing Pepper as Rescue, Jane and Darcy becoming heroes in their own rights, and Rhodes as War Machine. I also loved seeing how Natasha and Clint navigated this alternate universe they had landed in. I would love to read more fic in this verse. I'm also recommending this fic because it's a great introduction for the awesome ladies of the marvel universe and how they can shine.
Darcy/Loki
8)
Folkin' Around verse Summary: Darcy only wanted to get away for awhile. Loki only wanted to indulge his curiosity. But fate has set their paths to crossing, with each other and with something more; something that will prove to be very, very dangerous to the both of them.
Reason for rec: This series is already over 500k words long. It has great villains, interesting characters, action/adventure, romance, and I loved seeing how Loki and Darcy become friends and then something more.
Thor/Loki
9)
Dreamlittleyo - Shadow Plays Summary: In which Thor lives a single day more times than he can count, and Loki doesn't know how to fix it.
Reason for rec: This was one of my favorite groundhog day stories in the Thor fandom. I loved the concept, the character voices were spot on, and it had emotional intensity throughout most of the story.
10)
Aria, filiabelialis - Find a Home Summary: Loki lets his head fall back, a despairing smile baring his teeth. "What do you mean by home?"
Reason for rec: The character voices felt spot on, I loved seeing Thor adjust to being with the Avengers on Earth, I loved Loki's character voice and I never knew what he was going to do next. It doesn't hurt to mention that the sex scenes were incredibly hot.
11)
astolat: Chaos War Summary: It was never easy to find Loki when he wanted to hide, but he wasn't doing a particularly good job of it at the moment. Probably he didn't think anyone from Asgard would be wasting their time hunting for him while the shining ones churned their way steadily through all the realm.
Reason for rec: I loved seeing how Loki would be King of Asgard. I was on the edge of my seat, I loved the character voices, the dialogue was spot on and I could not stop reading once I started. I've re-read this story many times.
Gen
12)
skiesovergideon: Family Ties Summary: After his fall from the Bifrost, Loki finds himself taken in by a suburban family and lacking most of his magic. He resolves to escape them as soon as possible. This does not go the way he planned.
Reason for rec: I loved Loki's experiences on Earth and adjusting to his magic not quite being under his control. I also loved all the original characters and the ending was awesome.
13)
Galaxysoup - Darkness, Flooded in Light Summary: “When much is taken, something is returned.” - Terry Pratchett, Nation
Loki falls. Injured and unable to access his magic, he must struggle to restore himself physically and mentally before the Bifrost is repaired and Asgard comes to find him. That would be difficult enough, but one of Asgard’s deepest secrets has followed him...
Reason for rec: This story broke my heart and put it back together again. I LOVED all the original characters and Loki's character voice rang true for me. I could not stop reading once I started. I'm adding this story to the list because it's a great Loki focused story and it's about him healing and learning to live with himself.
14)
lettered - Responsible Science Series Summary: The Kids Weren’t Alright - Tony accidentally turns himself into a twelve-year-old using alien tech. Steve is stuck as bodyguard, Bruce is stuck trying to fix him, and Pepper is stuck trying to ward off a twelve-year old’s attempts at flirtation. And then things go from bad to worse.
Let's Stop The Time Warp (Again) - Steve Rogers has to live the same day over and over. Bruce, Tony, Pepper, Jane, and Thor try to help him. Then things go from bad to worse.
Reason for rec: This series is one of the best I've run across that is completely from Bruce Banner's pov. It has great character development, insights, and the plots are interesting. There is also a sense of the team coming together and beginning to understand each other.
15)
galaxysoup - Amateur Theatrics Summary:In which Thor’s primary problem-solving method (a mighty blow from Mjolnir) fails to have the desired effect on a magical artifact, and his secondary method (a mightier blow from Mjolnir) proves to be actively disastrous.
Reason for rec: This is one of the best Loki Kidfic stories I've run across. It has great character moments, it's a team fic, and I loved Clint Barton's pov and seeing how the Avengers dealt with their specific challenges.
Loki/Tony
16)
Scyllaya - Bend Around the Wind Summary: A few months after the battle of New York the God Loki appears back on Stark Tower under chaotic circumstances. This time however he is on the run. Tony Stark gets caught up in the crossfire and is taken along with the Aesir. Can the two of them ever make truce in order to get away? And even if they do, how does one escape from such a dark corner of the universe, when they are so very far away from the Nine Realms, that not even Loki knows the way back home. But first, they need to survive.
Reason for rec: This story is epic, it has great build up, the pay off is awesome, and I couldn't stop reading once I started. I loved seeing how Tony and Loki become friends and then something more. This is one of the best Tony/Loki fics I've read.
Bruce Banner/Tony Stark
17)
ifitwasribald - What We Pretend To Be Summary: Good becomes great, bad becomes worse. But people are a hell of a lot more complicated than good and bad. When half of the team is dosed with the super soldier serum, they all have to grapple with their own pasts and futures. But for better or for worse, they’re all in it together.
Reason for rec: I loved seeing how the team dealt with not knowing what would happen to their teammates once the super solider serum activated. I'm recommending this fic because it's a good team fic, it shows what the characters will do when the chips are down, and it is great to see them face their worst fears.
